Zero posts and Zero categories on Dashboard?

  I have 10 private posts in few different categories.
  Problem1: Dashboard shows ‘0’ posts
  Problem 2: Categories Widgets drop down menu shows ‘Select category’ and doesn’t show categories listed.

  The posts need to be public before they are reflected in your numbers and the category drop-down.

  If you’re going to keep your whole blog private, try publishing everything normally and just set your blog as private via Settings -> Privacy in your Dashboard.
