Zero to Hero: Day Fifteen

Feeling fickle. My blog looks busy to me . . . . I would love to get rid of the photo sidebar but I don’t think it’s customizeable or deleteable with my theme. Also is there any way to on my home page as it appears now (I realize I can set my “home” page to another page) to have less past posts (in summary with the photo) appear beneath the latest post? I tried in the settings to include “1 post” but not sure what happened. . . . One thing I did that I liked was change my front page to be my recipe page, it eliminated the photo sidebar . . . but the photos and text look totally weird and not aligned when they appear on the recipe page. patiently and enthusiastically trudging the happy road of blogging destiny . . . .

I’m sorry but I’m having a very busy day at work and don’t have time to answer your questions in detail.

I would love to get rid of the photo sidebar but I don’t think it’s customizeable or deleteable with my theme.

What does detailed theme description say here? http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/ideation-and-intent/ There is no option to remove it stated there and CSS editing cannot be used to change how any theme is designed to function.

My recommendation is choose another theme to customize. Try a 2 column one http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/two-columns/ I favor responsive layout themes that adapts the display in accord with the device being used to view the theme.
    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-layout/

    My Screen Resolution is 1024 x 768
My browser size is Browser Size 1024 x 559

I strongly dislike the theme you are using now. Those who are on screens the size of mine at 17 inches and less get a horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of it ie. we cannot see the theme at full width without using it.

I love tweaking my blog. That’s what I love about WordPress is all the options you have to change settings. I don’t have the upgrade but maybe I’ll think about getting it. It doesn’t seem like my theme has any other ways to change my font. I do love my theme the way it is, however.

@timethief for some reason your honesty just made me laugh out loud!!!! thank you. Now, let me get to work. appreciate the feedback and will get back to the forum at the end of the day.

    @timethief
I took your advice and added the “More” tag to my post today and its really cool that way.
And of course you know I changed my theme and added a custom banner. Cleaned up my side bar, took out several widgets as it had that cluttered up look to it.
    Also, a question for you?
I emailed WordPress support almost a week ago (still no response) and wanted to know with the Premium upgrade, does that include hosting the blog? (lame question I know)
    Thank you!

I rein my honesty every day because the world full of special snowflakes, presumably raised by politically correct parents so they expect to hear only nurturing, encouragement and supportive comments their whole lives long. Even even when they are over 30 years old! (for frap sake) they still can’t handle honesty, let alone, constructive criticism without posturing as victims and passively aggressively attacking those who post honest responses. They claim it takes a village but they refuse to acknowledge that folks like me ie. blunt – direct – honest and not easily manipulated, are members of that global village. Poor wee things – psssst –
pass me the flamethrower .. lol :D

Yo! Posting questions here on the support m forums means you get a quick answer as we Volunteers have been here a very long time, longer than most Staff have been on Staff.

ANSWER: All WordPress.com blogs are free hosted blogs. Why do you think your need a bundle of premium upgrades? See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/

Note that none of the plans allow you to run advertising or to upload your own themes or plugins. WordPress.com blogs cannot be equipped for eCommerce transactions. If you need a site that requires a custom theme or plugins — e.g., if you want to be able to sell things directly from your site, or if you want to install discussion forums — a self-hosted WordPress site might be right for you.

Actually, this is something I’ve been meaning to revisit but have been putting off. I have bought the custom upgrade thingy and rather lazily, found something I was happy with and left it at that. For instance, I use a dark grey, not black for the main body of the text as I find it less harsh plus if you roll over my headings, they turn pink. WhenI changed themes as part of the earlier zero to hero challenge, I updated my fonts too as I’d not changed in years. I was so sceptical but I love how they look now! The font for my blog title is spookily similar to my handwriting which is a fun fact I love :D I’m deffo going to play and see what I can do now. I suspect the fonts will stay the same but the pink might get updated plus I am redoing my recipe page and that might need some new CSS coding. It’s about time I flexed my skills there again!

    Happy blogging everyone :D

Is it worth me buying the upgrade if i am brand new to WordPress? Would it be a waste of money?

What do you guys think about the color scheme on my blog? http://thatmadmuslimah.wordpress.com/

    Feedback is most welcome :)

  • Unknown's avatar

@jobakes, are you using the new recipe shortcode? More: http://en.support.wordpress.com/shortcodes/recipes/

@themadmuslimah, you can use the Customizer to preview new colors and fonts, even if you haven’t purchased the upgrade. Spend a bit of time playing with it first, and see if you actually like the changes more than what you currently have. It less about how new you are, and more about your vision for your blog (and your budget).

  • Unknown's avatar

I really like your choice of background colour @theMadMuslimah – very calming indeed. As for buying the upgrade, it depends on how much you know about coding already. If you know plenty then go ahead – you can fiddle easily and really personalise your blog. For me, I find the technical side of blogging tough, really ouside my comfort zone. So I needed help from a fellow blogger friend with a background in graphic design and the CSS forums here! In fact I just posted another question/plea for help lol…

I am @michelleweber :D I love it! I just need to figure to how to get my old heading in and I shall use it for all new blog posts to come :D

Thank you for your prompt reply, you da Woman!
I don’t do commerce or anything like that. I mainly wanted to upgrade to get the domain URL instead of the wordpress.com yada.

    @easygoingmama
I set a budget for each blog and refuse to go over it. My budget is $50. US per year per blog. That buys me a domain mapping upgrade and a no-ads upgrade for each one. http://en.support.wordpress.com/upgrades/

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

I’m only having one blog, period! $99.00 is very reasonable for one year. I know the dot.com is not available but others are, such as dot.net, dot.org, etc.
I do know it takes awhile for the blog URL to switch over. I’m not in any big hurry.
Thank you again for the info, most helpful!

Yes it’s reasonable if you want what comes with the bundle, but I don’t want or need any upgrades other than the two I referred to. :)

Finished early today. Now I can read all evening!

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh thank goodness you’re all still here. Sorry I’m late but I’ve just spent the entire evening giving a rainbow directions: “Ok so what you want to do is go straight until you are refracted by water molecules into an arch….i suggest sending indigo first and when she gets to her destination the rest of you can just follow her route.”

Anyway I gave my whole blog an overhall. At the start I thought it should be dark like certain facets of my mind but after chattin to the rainbow and seeing how he rocked the colour I totally changed my mind. Luckily there was a theme that suited the mood.

….but I did like the old one…..hmmmm…..? Go back to where you once belonged or shine on you crazy diamond? Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Ok so I just checked out my new theme on my phone. On a computer there I have a sidebar located, you guessed it,to the side but on my phone I’ve got to go way down to the bottom….and I mean way down. It seems that there is an unreasonable amount of space between each comment. Anyway this means that viewers cant get to any of my recent posts or make a comment without taking the a trip the length of the trans-Siberian railway all the way down. Is there any way to get a sidebar to the side on the mobile site or does this theme just not have that option? Could be back to the old theme for me….
