Zero to Hero: Day Four

  • Unknown's avatar

Before today’s task came up today, I did a bit of this, this morning, and it resulted in this post.

One thing I’ve learnt from when I took part in a similar challenge, back in 2011 [Post a Day]: I got overly enthusiastic, and subscribed/followed too many. It quickly became overwhelming, just to look into the Reader, and it soon felt like a chore.

Something to think about perhaps …

Today’s Zero to Hero task was a good exercise -I have been struggling with choosing topics in the Reader, as it is overwhelming to have topics that result in a LOT of posts every day. But in doing this exercise, I discovered a new blog and a truly helpful post on “curating” topics through the Reader that will help increase the amount of blog posts that you are interested in.

Here is a link to that very helpful post! http://werrrds.wordpress.com/2014/01/05/what-curation-can-teach-you-about-finding-focus-for-your-blog/

Day 4 complete. Tomorrow I go back to work so keeping up may get more challenging. I’m inspired by the other bloggers both old and new but will be pushing myself to keep up.

I was excited about this challenge. I had already followed some new bloggers ftom the zero to hero challenge. I added a few more with links to them on my blog post, along with links to other bloggers that i felt worthy of a mention as so many of those bloggers had helped me out in the beginning. As i said in my post today, seasoned bloggers aren’t always the friendliest group of people and I’m thankful to the few that embraced my blog, otherwise i would have given up. I enjoyed today’s challenge

@tjbarkerseattle, thanks for sharing that link.

@greetingsfromindia, please refrain from continually reposting the same link to your blog; it will be removed.

A little late in the day, but I’m finally on “Day 4” Zero to Hero.

I did this a little different. I just searched through all the comments today and found some blogs that matched my interests!

I obviously love traveling and culture so I picked up:
    http://maldivesdreamer.com/ (@maldivesdreamer)
    http://anewyearsresolutionchallenge.wordpress.com/ (@cteavin)

I also love running, Broadway and photography so I started following these:

    Hi, everybody,

I am following some bloggers and reading their blogs through Reader. I also love to write articles in Chinese, and have published some in my own blog.

However, so far I have not found any other Chinese bloggers with whom I can connect and share the experience in writing.

Any leads to find Chinese bloggers at WordPress?

    Thanks,

    Yan

This was a quite helpful assignment. I found some blogs that are exactly what I envision mine to become, as far as functionality goes. I didn’t quite know what questions to ask, but now I see the answers to what those questions might have been.

In addition to looking at this assignment through the eyes of a blogger, I simply put in topics that I deal with in my everyday life. I found some great information out there.

Incidentally, I have a conference call with my Year-long Agreement Group in a few minutes. I will be happy to report that I have fulfilled my agreement. I am even more excited that I am not just doing the minimum to meet my agreement, but I am truly honing my craft in the process. And, of course, I will be posting before the night is through… and I’m happy about it!

Greetings one & all. There’s an awful lot to cover in Reader but it gives us a huge scope. I’m stuck at the beginning. I don’t have Topics I have tags from my previous blogs & I don’t get any results if I put in a new one. What to do??

Also found lots of help on ‘Get Comfy’ on Learn WordPress.com but not sure about blogrolls either. Maybe we’ll do that another day.

Ok, earlier I posted about struggling to find another blog to follow. I ended up broadening my search terms in the Tags box and now I think I’ve added 8 or so total new follows today including giving a person their first follow.

    @sconquest, yep, we’ll get to blogrolls :)

The Photographicalist’s day 4 of zerotohero

I’m all about photos and community, so I looked for blogs in our zerotohero community that are about photography. But it was hard to work out who among the hundreds of bloggers doing this challenge focusses on photography. Plus, I kept getting distracted by cool blogs, like the brave transformingmommy, or the Spanish language site of jgsanchez2030 that tempts me to linger and practice my Spanish, or the link to excellent writing advice offered by alexandraneedham, or the inexplicable “while you ponder, enjoy this fox” by hugeblogs, or by … well, you get the picture.

However, I finally have a list of five sites to follow that are a) zerotohero – ists and b) about photography. The list is below for the interest of fellow photographers.

captureyouphotography, Sonya Lira’s bog on Portrait Photography

theshutterjournal (http://theshutterjournal.com/) Photo enthusiast Jason McCosker’s blog – turns out he’s from Eastern Australia like me!

macroplography (macroblography.wordpress.com) an aptly named blog with gorgeous macro photos.

the changingpalette (thechangingpalette.com) who seems to jump for joy at photo challenges

Chronicles of a Suburban Nature Mom, who seems to have a real photographic flair.

Also, I followed my own site so I could see how my posts look in that format and company.

    Did I miss anyone?

    Hello Yan,

When I posted above I spotted your email saying “so far I have not found any other Chinese bloggers with whom I can connect and share the experience in writing. Any leads to find Chinese bloggers at WordPress” I happened to see a Chinese blog in the zerotohero tag list earlier today. Just found it. You can find it at http://wordpress.com/read/blog/id/37373234/ and it looks like the URL is 2sojourners.com

And Day 4 is done: http://polymathically.wordpress.com/2014/01/05/zero-to-hero-day-4-explore-the-neighborhood/

This was actually a really helpful assignment. I’d never used the Reader before, so I definitely found some interesting stuff. Does anyone know of any great Psychology and Literary blogs? Thanks in advance.

  • Unknown's avatar

I saw one user mention that they like Blovlovin’ for reading their blogs – does anyone else use other readers besides WordPress Reader? Especially for Windows 8 and Windows 8 Phone?

  • Unknown's avatar

I really enjoyed today’s challenge. I learned more about the reader, and I found a lot of blogs that interested me that I’m now following. This challenges helped me learn a lot. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Forgive me if I’m posting in the wrong area. I’ve been trying to participate in the challenge and have been posting, but I’ve just discovered today that my posts are not being included with the others. I’ve properly tagged each post with zerotohero. I’ve even uninstalled and reinstalled wordpress with a free theme and very few plugins. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any suggestions? I’ve tried searching for help, but haven’t found anything too useful. My URL: http://www.elizabethlos.com

authorelos, I took a quick look at the link you gave for your site, and I see a few tags near the top of your site (zerotoherozero to hero, zerotohero) but all of them have a link to your own site rather than the wordpress zerotohero page which is dailypost.wordpress.com/zero-to-hero. I used the instructions on http://dailypost.wordpress.com/zero-to-hero/comment-page-2/#comments to make my badge and link, have you checked those instructions? Anyway, that’s all I know (not much) so if none of that helps then you’ll need to get support from others esp WordPress.

This is a great task for me. It’s exactly why I’ve started my blog; to get connected with like-minded individuals and groups. The kind of people doing the same thing as me, or have already been there and got the T-shirt.

I’m blogging about my journey on writing a novel and getting it into bookshops and would love to follow other kindred would-be novelists. So, if you know any good blogs about that please point me in their direction.
