Zero to Hero: Day Nine

NOTE: Zero to Hero forum threads will close after five days. If you’re just starting out, welcome! Feel free to visit a more recent thread to say hello, ask questions, or seek feedback. Happy blogging!
Day Nine! Time to keep building your community.
Today’s is another community exploration day. There’s no way to overestimate how important it is for your own community (and for the health of the blogging community as a whole) that you engage with other bloggers. Plus, it’s fun! Full details on the main page.
Find a great new read? Share it here!
Use this space as a place to ask questions and seek feedback from fellow bloggers, or just to talk about blogging, why you’re here, and how your month is going.
Please refrain from posting links to your blog unless you’re seeking feedback — this is a place for discussion. Given the number of participants and length of these threads, we are deleting comments that are simply links to make it easier for participants to have real discussions with one another. Instead, give your posts the “zerotohero” tag to enable other participants to find you.
The Daily Post has a weekly open thread on Sundays called “Community Pool,” for peer feedback. If you’re looking for general feedback on your blog or feedback unrelated to this challenge, please visit that thread.

If I want to find new blogger that have just opened up WordPress what would I type in to the search engine? I want to find new bloggers to see how they are dealing with the WordPress challenge and what they are in to :)
I am a new blogger too! http://thatmadmuslimah.wordpress.com/
-
@themadmuslimah, “zerotohero” would be the best place to start. You could also look for things like “New Years Resolutions” — you’d likely find many new bloggers there as well.
-
also, is there any way of founding out if a blog/website has opened recently? i am really interested to see how they are are handing the workload

I love finding new blogs / bloggers, and finding someone yoy click with is magic, but I’m finding my Reader getting more overwhelming the more I follow, how do other people keep up with this? So much to read and connect with, so little time!
-
Is this task just for traffic? I mean, I don’t want to follow dozens of blogs just because I want followers. I follow blogs because I like them and want to learn from them. Even after reading the post, I’m still confused…
-
@silverliningsproject, I know how you feel! I think you should make sure that you follow their blogs because you really like them, not because you want to have traffic.
-
Great topic and one I’ve already done this week. I’ve followed 5 new blogs and prefer to stick to those that interest me or capture me in some way. I’m not all about how many followers I can get as I blog for fun and for a worthy cause. I will of course be checking out more blogs today. Cheers!
-
@lunacooler, no, not at all. Traffic may be a side effect of it, but the point of the task is to continue getting engaging with the community — because you like reading them, because they inspire you, because you not-so-secretly want to to have them over for coffee.
@silverliningsproject, I set myself little daily goals: today, I’ll skim five of my topics. Today, I’ll read ten posts from bloggers I follow. There’s no way to keep up with everything all the time, so I try to break it into manageable chunks.
Other people have tools they like — I believe a few folks mentioned Bloglovin’ on one of the other threads.
-
I should also say: reaching out to others only helps your own traffic if you’re engaging in an authentic way — leaving substantive, thoughtful comments, and allowing yourself to be moved by what others publish.
So although reaching out might be considered a traffic tactic, it’s not *only* a traffic tactic; those connections still have to be real.
-
@michelleweber, I totally agree with you! I love visiting blogs and commenting. And I always reply back to those who comment on my blog, unless they spam me with links. Being authentic is the only way to be truly successful. Love what you’re doing here, I’ve learned a lot!
-
@easygoingmama, I’m so glad to hear it :)
There are some tasks that are repeated more than once, like today’s, but it’s only because they’re such a critical part of the blogging experience, and I really want to reinforce that blogging is about much more than just hitting “publish.”
-
The advice from @michelleweber on setting aside a finite space for blog reading (e.g. 10 posts, 5 topics, 30 minutes) is really key. I tend to follow a lot of people and topics, and it can get overwhelming if I don’t have a agreement with myself to dip in and out regularly and briefly. I want to stay engaged but not get so lost that I don’t have any time to create myself.
-
@michelleweber, thank you for this, and I love your comment about the coffee, I’ve felt like that quite a lot! I worry that if I don’t read everyone’s posts I’ll miss something amazing, but I will definitely try your tips, thanks :)

I just wanted to stop by and say this has been an awesome experience for me so far. My sister and I started new blogs a couple of months ago, and the participation helped to meet quite a lot of nice people, find some great stuff to read and improve the quality of our blogs.
I agree that reaching out has to be more than just a tactic; the problem is finding the people you really want to reach out to, who share your interests and do work you like, amid the millions of WordPress blogs.

Crap! Battery is going to die!
Sorry, I can’t answer your call right now. Dog the Bounty Hunter Might be calling.

Even though I thought I already follow too many blogs, I jumped into this challenge with both feet.
I wont put up a link because I don’t think you are supposed to promote your blog on this forum, but you can read about how I tackled this challenge by clicking on my name on the left.
Looking forward to tomorrow!
