Zero to Hero: Day Nineteen
-
Painful though it was, I have shortened down my written component by more than half my usual word count and made use of the tile demoniac gallery instead of adding images one at a time. It’s punctuated with short paragraphs of text and I am utilising the fabulous and new Recipe Short Code now (BIG LOVE to this short code!). It’s quite different to my usual style but I absolutely love how easy it was to add in all my foodie process shots. It makes me weep to try and do it in PhotoShop – this is deliriously easy!
I have to give a big shout out @timethief who has given me the heads up on how to do much of these new features :D THANK YOU HUN!

@jobakes
You’re welcome – read – commented – tweeted link. Also see here though re: CSS upgrade and the recipe shortcode -
I’ve tried out post formats with Wrtr theme and can’t see any difference! “Aside” doesn’t seem to place the text in a different position.
Image allows me to insert a picture – but I could do that anyway from the “insert media” instruction.
One thing that I did manage is inserting a link – but again, I don’t think that needed to use the format button, there is a link instruction on the editing screen.
Am I missing something here? I’ve been playing round with draft copies and not publishing any of this. Perhaps formats only show after the post is published? -
Thank you very much indeed time thief, you’re so generous.
Ooo that looks interesting to what Carrie is asking about header images. Do I copy that code into my CSS sheet and change to my url? Am I reading that right? -

No. Remember that all CSS editing is theme specific editing and you are not using the same theme. Post your own thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform

Ah, not the first time I’ve made that mistake this week @timethief… Sigh… One day I’ll really understand coding! I will check that link now – I already have a few to read from a question I posted about my header font…

(But I digress – apologies for wandering off topic a bit everyone!)

@lassfromlancashire
You aren’t missing anything as far as I can tell. Mobile and tablet use are exploding. Most folks will not be using only desktops to “blog” on in the future. In fact the style of blogging is changing as people who are on the move and using mobiles and tablets simply publish a post format and that amounts to publishing a “post”. Hence some of the blog styles or kind of “blogs” we see in the future may amount to collections of post formats published periodically throughout the day. -
@jobakes
Not to worry. justpi is a Volunteer who posts precise and specific CSS editing instructions. Never deviate from what he provides or you will be in the ditch. thesacredpath was a Volunteer who is now on Staff (he’s also my co-admin on my blogs) and he and designsimply tend to be the Staff members who answer most CSS questions. :) -
Brilliant – thank you. I am trying really hard to learn for myself so I don’t have to ask for help every time. I know they wouldn’t offer answers if they didn’t want to share but it’s only right to try to stand on one’s own feet at some point, no?

@timethief
Thanks for the reassurance. I still don’t see any difference when I post something as “aside”. It just appears in the same place. Will keep trying but none of today’s stuff is more than draft. -
I posted a quote! (as well as a proper post). It was so easy I’m wondering if I missed something…

@lassfromlancashire, with the Writr theme, post formats are denoted by the icon next to the post — each post’s formatting stays basically the same. You can see all the icons on the theme’s showcase page:

Alas, struggling to keep up with zerotohero now. My posts take so long to draft! However, I am keeping all of these tasks in mind for future reference. I am still pleased to be reading around tools on WordPress that I did not know existed until these challenges. Quite in awe of how quickly some of you can turn posts around!

@cogitoergomum, I’d encourage you to try today’s task them — it’s meant to help you explore ways to break away from long text-heavy posts and try other ways of sharing content. If you need a break though, take a break!

@lassfromlancashire
The blog linked to your lassfromlancashire username is wearing Spectrum so I assume you either changed themes or are referring to a different blog. Which is it please? -
It just seems such a shift from what I usually do, I don’t want to confuse people (i.e. me) as to what the blog is all about. Even if the post is really short, or an image, or a quote, I want it to really ‘fit’. Working out what might fit seems to take me lots of time – just as much time as writing loads of words. To compound the problem I am still thinking of yesterday’s task. The sort of shorter/visual/quotey posts I can think of would fit better on a Facebook page than on my blog. Hmmm. Off to ponder. See you tomorrow, hopefully with some ideas up my sleeve!
