Zero to Hero: Day Seven
-
I found a photo for my Spectrum theme front page and I’m cropping it….and it’s taking forever. It says “cropping…” in the lower right corner. Is it supposed to take this long?

@ldkmoore
How large is the image?
Is it directly out of your camera?
When it takes a long time that usually means the image is HUGE!
What is the image file type?
See here http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/#troubleshooting
I don’t upload and image unless I have optimized it for the web and sized it to fit the space I will upload it into. Lately the image uploader here is so grindingly slow during prime time internet hours in North America that I avoid using it during those hours. -
@ldkmoore
Let’s see what you get when you type “CSS” into Google search.
https://www.google.ca/?gws_rd=cr&ei=YpzNUsWKJtSuqwHcsoDAAQ#q=CSS
Then let’s see what you get if you type it into the searchbox at the support documentation site http://support.wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=CSSI’m the type of Volunteer who does not choose to post answers I don’t support with links. I prefer to teach new blogger how to fish (search) rather than doing it for them because If I do that they learn nothing and they need to know how to search to blog well.

@ldkmoore
CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheet.
It is a sort of programming language for defining the style of Web pages and other structured information. If you ever get into designing Web pages in anyway a basic understanding of simple CSS is really helpful. Let us know if you want to know more. -

How to search
Our WordPress.com support docs are all here. http://support.wordpress.com
The Tags search page is in the Reader area of the Dashboard.
http://wordpress.com/tags/
For Topics (Tags page) searches see http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/ This is the syntax http://en/wordpress.com/tags/canada
See here http://wordpress.com/#!/read/topics/For Google searches use this format and replace “keyword” with whatever word you wish:
keyword site:wordpress.com/Example search string
Queen Victoria site:wordpress.com
results > http://tinyurl.com/csaobsxFor Tags searches in the support forums here’s the format

@Idkmoore, I’m not sure what CSS means either, but I think it’s a kind of code to customize your blog.
Also guys, check out the Cutest Blog on the Block (yes, that’s the name). I know that their styles won’t appeal to everyone, but it is a hit with a lot of people. They have tons of Blogger backgrounds, templates, and headers (banners), WordPress.org templates, and some stuff for social networking sites. You can use one of their headers (doesn’t matter if it’s Twitter, Facebook, or Blogger, still works the same) for your blog. All you need to put in is the text, which you can do so with photo editing sites. -
@pkanwar1983
That’s theme dependent. On some themes “yes” but on others “no”. The terms to search for in the support docs at http://support.wordpress.com are “custom header images” and “featured images“. -
So I’m trying to source my image but I must not be doing it right. How do I create the link to my source?
-
@jonflgiles
Every regular Volunteer here can answer questions like that instantly but when we do that bloggers don’t learn how to use search utilities. That’s why we don’t do it. We provide instructions so they find their own answers and learn the skills they need to be come accomplished bloggers. -
This is the guide for creating links in posts and pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
This is the general link model:
<a href="URL HERE">Highlighted anchor text here</a>
This is the visual result – it’s not actually linked here in the forum.
Highlighted anchor text here1. Enter the relevant descriptive anchor text you want to link to first. Note that “here” is not a good choice.
2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text. (If you don’t highlight the anchor text the chain icon will remain grayed out and not be useable.)
3. Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link.More here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/05/20/creating-html-hyperlinks-links-in-wordpress/

@ldkmoore, we’ve got some intro posts on CSS over on The Daily Post — here’s the first installment:
-
Also, for anyone wondering — if the image you use from your header needs to be attributed, you can do that in a text widget in your sidebar (which, after Day Two, you should know how to create!).

@timethief Thanks!
Also I am trying to resize some imgaes to try for my background but they are getting tiled or are too big….how to know what’s size’s perfect…especially width..

re: zero to hero assignments
I hope learning how to use search utilities is going to happen real soon. What we Volunteers have notice when answering support forum questions is an increased expectation by beginner bloggers that they can fire us a question and we will fire back and answer without demonstrating where to find the answer. That means they are back again asking for instant answers over and over. As they don’t use the docs we don’t know which part they don’t comprehend in the instructions so it can be improved for future users. There are even those who have audacity to come back again and again and get pissed off when we don’t toss back an instant answer without a link to back it up. The bottom line is if they never learn how to search utilities their blogs will never be the best they can be and that’s sad. -
I just decided to go with one simple image of a confused foreigner trying to figure out Chinese… but the layout I chose also includes images from my posts, perhaps it might confuse some further? http://wp.me/4bJUq

@pkanwar1983
What does the theme description provide?
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/visual/
What does it say here for header width? Appearance > Header
I believe I recall the suggested width is 1020 pixels on Visual. -
Ok, maybe I wasn’t clear about my problem. Sorry. I am wanting to link a source to my blog’s header image. Not in a post or a page. I am able to source the image via a text widget, but am unable to link it.
