Zero to Hero: Day Seven
-
so I take it that things have cooled down. Can we make a fresh start and start the new year with jolly feelings?
Many kinds regards to everyone and keep smiling

@timethief thanks for the feedback :D. I *did* think another image as a header would be *too* much on the visual side of things. What I might do is draw myself a graphic header to use on my recipe PDFs. As for the background, I was thinking of editing a partial photo of the stained glass windows we have in our home (The Apple Chapel) and grey ing it out with photo editing software but you may be right – too many visuals as you say…
-
@areed090290, you can’t really make it into one image. But you can enlarge the dimensions of the flower photo using PicMonkey so it won’t look like it’s repeating. Also, the Twenty Fourteen custom background can only be seen on wide screens, so not everyone will see your background.
-
Well that’s okay if they can’t. I think I may leave it white anyway. After reading some of the comments, it might be better to do it that way. Thank you for checking out my blog! :-)

I love that idea but unless or until your try greying it down and it turns out to be subtle and non-distracting, I’m sticking to the advice re: plain background. That said no background has to be bright white as you can vary the tint here > Appearance > Background by using the color selector.
Why not do the stained glass idea it on a post or page? We can have galleries and slideshows on any post or page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/
You can even do a text over image thing on it and be really adventurous. The great thing about blogs is we can change the appearance so don’t be afraid to try.Great news re: recipes is found here > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/recipe-plugin-4?replies=27

@lundcooler
I’m think the http://learn.wordpress.com blogging tutorial is a good one and I refer my readers to it.P.S. I found this tiling background image and thought you might like it better http://www.72psd.com/blue-floral-background-pattern/ but if you don’t that’s fine.

I have truly been taking baby steps with the design of my page. Their is an idea in my head. I just need to translate that outwardly. If the task doesn’t get done today, I will hopefully have it all spiffed and ready by the first of next month…baby steps

Here is the detailed theme description http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/ Take a close look at the features column and know no matter what you do in the customizer it will not display in the blog unless the feature is found in that list.WordPress.com sells annually renewable custom design upgrades and there is a free preview function we can use in the customizer but without purchasing the up grade we are limited to custom backgrounds and custom headers, generally speaking.
See here for details on purchasing the annually renewable custom and CSS editing:
Custom design – Frequently Asked Questions

http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-fonts/If you have not purchased the custom design upgrade note that no changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side) will be visible to visitors.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-fonts/You do not need to load the design tools unless you have the Custom Design upgrade. All of these functions can be accessed from your dashboard – without loading the custom design tools – no upgrade required.
Appearance > Header
Appearance > Background
Appearance > Theme Options (applicable only to some themes)
Settings > Reading (set a static front page)
Site Title and Tagline > Settings > GeneralIf you are using the preview mode for the Custom Design upgrade some of the settings in that mode will save but they won’t show up on the front end unless you purchase the upgrade.
To go back to the free options, go to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Colors and click the “exit the preview” link in yellow at the top of the panel on the right.

@timethief, the blue pattern is quite nice but it’s almost the same color as my header, and it’s not quite my taste. Thanks for suggesting, though. I have been downloading backgrounds from Google Images and trying them out on my blog, however.
-
I admit, I never tried my hand with headers. I tried it first with some pictures and that didn’t come out I looked smudged and stretch and pulled, Yuck. Trust me it was a fail. I decided to copy the title of my blog in my own handwriting as a header. I uploaded it and viola! My custom b header. Which really ain’t all that jazzy but it’s mines wand I love it. @lunacooler
No problem but be aware that when you look at the backgrounds on Google image search https://www.google.ca/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi&ei=79PNUqquCMnSyAGgmIC4BA&ved=0CAQQqi4oAg you are viewing in their indexed content. The images there are not being offered for use. The majority are under a copyright warning so be a sure you find terms of use before capturing any. Best wishes. -

Yay! You did it, Dee. I tweeted your most recent post under my other username which is thistimethisspace here at wordpress.com and thistimespace on twitter. -
Wow Timethief is busy! If she didn’t steal time she’d have none left to get other stuff done. Three cheers for Timethief and all her great advice! Hip hip…

Hip hip….
I seriously hope WordPress are paying you for all this! Keep up the good work. -
@vegasesundance
No I don’t get paid. No I have not applied for a job as a Happiness Engineers because one needs to have CSS editing skills and I don’t have any nor do I have the time to learn them. I’m too busy answering questions to learn them.P.S. Undercover cop, eh … SNORT! I visited your blog and you are hilarious. Best wishes with the challenge.
-
Well you are in luck. I’ve just left the undercover cop business. It seems they found out I’m not very good at keeping secrets. So maybe I could be a CSS instructor. How hard can it be?
Step 1: Find out what CSS means.
Step 2: Teach the meaning to others at an extortionate rate.
Step 3: Lather, Rinse, Repeat. -
Here is my gift to you. (and # 5 of Z-H)
I’ve posted a fantastic youtube clip very noteworthy ~ how EVERNOTE can be useful for bloggers
…..enjoy. Cheers J -
Ok, I tried to insert an image, but decided I needed the text on the image instead of above it. Time to go into photo shop and have some fun.
-
Why is somebody not pointing out that @timethief here also seems to promote her own twitter and her own other stuff.
Yay! You did it, Dee. I tweeted your most recent post under my other username which is thistimethisspace here at wordpress.com and thistimespace on twitter.
Is this not spamming?
Regards.

When I tried to explain about text widget and image widget on my site then my comments were deleted but here I clearly see that @timethief is promoting her site and twitter in a smart way by using “at” for her site and twitter and not making them links.
Yay! You did it, Dee. I tweeted your most recent post under my other username which is thistimethisspace here at wordpress.com and thistimespace on twitter.
