Zero to Hero: Day Seven
-
@jonathanyeong Thanks, Ive changed themes for the moment and side bar is there. I probably need time out and come back to it with fresh approach. I think Ive done something strange with menus and seems to be no option to delete. Thanks for message really do appreciate it.
Im wondering if I purchase a easy premium theme that is stable and easy to use? any suggestions out there?
many thanks Jenn -
Sonya are you tagging your posts and creating categories in your widget settings? Not sure if that helps but when people click on the tag that group will come up together. Cheers J

@jenniferjgrainger
I tag each post. I always pick the categories for the post. Can you check it out and tell me if it is showing up like that? When I look I see the post in the order they were posted not by categories. Here is a link to one o my blogs.. -
Hello all! I changed my header photo and background color (it’s a photo of my son and I put in a color that doesn’t clash with the photo) but I was unable to change the color of the tabs where the text of the menus goes (blue in case of my blog). Is it because the theme doesn’t allow it?
~Zainab -
OK I found a few limited options in the theme options. I guess I would have more if I upgraded.
-
Thank you for this assignment.
I have just done.
I forgot to set up a header after choosing a theme. -
Hi guys,
It’s always nice to get a feedback. However, I didn’t take today’s challenge. I did my design in the middle of this summer when I started my blog, but I’m still not sure about it. I have a lot of ideas in mind and I want to come clear in head first and just work after that.
I edited my header’s image myself and even added some own sketches to it, to make it more personal.
I would love to hear some comments about my look. What do you like, what don’t you like?
So here it is: http://votsblog.wordpress.com/
Thank you so much! (:

@captureyouphotography – You could create a custom menu and group them. You’ll see that there is a panel for categories in the custom menu options, but you can use the links panel to link to your tags.

The theme you are using Twenty Ten is stable. All themes free and premium are stable. It’s what bloggers do that changes them. You have done CSS editing on the theme which has made the theme wider causing a horizontal scroll bar to appear on the bottom of the theme. You have changed font size so it’s so large now that I have to use keyboard shortcuts to reduce it.
1. dashboard drop down has gone.
2. side bar has dropped down under page – Ive deleted all widgets.
3. 2 x HOME page1. dashboard drop down has gone.
Probably browser related but I have no idea what your details are like which browser and version of it you are using. Could be screen resolution size issue or browser size issue. I have no idea which device you are using and what your Operating system is and what your screen resolution and/or browser size is set to.
These are my details so you understand what we what we need to know to begin to help you when you need technical support.
Operating System Windows Windows 7
Web Browser Firefox 26.0
JavaScript enabled
Third party cookies enabled.
Screen Resolution 1024 x 768
Browser Size 1024 x 559
From: http://supportdetails.com2. side bar has dropped down under page – Ive deleted all widgets.
Know also that sidebars don’t just fall out of the blue. Sidebars and widgets in them do not (a) fall to the bottom and display below posts and/or (b) posts do not appear in sidebars unless and/or (c) fonts do not suddenly become bold or italicized unless
(1) content has been imported into the blog
(2) the blogger has been copying and pasting content from elsewhere, without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text
(3) or the blogger has copied and pasted invalid HTML into a text widget or left an HTML tag open
After you go here and enable this > Settings > Writing
Formatting
_ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
“save changes”See here for sorting this out > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/sidebar-at-the-bottom-and-related-issues/
I don’t know why you deleted all the widgets. After you change themes you go to > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and reposition them.
3. 2 x HOME page
That’s easy to address. The theme provided a Home Page and you created another one. Go to > Appearance > Menus and locate and include only the Home page you want to be displayed in it.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-pagesThis is too much for me! should I just delete blog and start again???? really appreciate if there is anyone out there in the bloggosphere who can offer advice.
Never ever delete a WordPress.COM blog URL to resolve a technical issue. Deletion is irreversible and solves nothing!
http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/You dove into the pool head first and purchased an upgrade you do not know how to use and I think you changed themes after making CSS changes to a different theme. I am wondering if you would not be better served by creating a thread in the CSS forums and getting help there. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform
Note that CSS editing is theme specific editing and you say you changed themes. Was that after you did the CSS editing?Bottom line: You need to start a separate of your own please https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/support#postform then we can assist you outside of these challenge threads.

I have a few questions which I think the answers are intuitive to others but not me:
1) When I find an image through Creative Commons, where to I find the link and license for it? I used all my own photography b/c I couldn’t figure it out.
2) The copyright/licensing was discussed for header images, what if we use the images in posts? Do we put that info in the caption?
3) Can you have more than one text widget (I’m at work and can’t look right now)
4) I redid my header to be a picture from my recent trip to Lake Placid and the background from the sky of another pic from there. Is there too much blue/sky with both of them? I’m trying to figure out if it looks too blendy and I should revert to a plain background. http://eyeslikeglass.wordpress.com/Thanks!

@captureyouphotography
I’m with daphnec2002 on this. Below are detailed instructions for creating a custom menu and including dynamic categories pages in it.Please read this first Post vs. Page http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
(1) There is only one page we can post to in any blog.
(2) The static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ we bloggers create do not automatically update.Only the dynamic pages like Archives, Categories and Tags created by the software when we publish a post will update automatically update with new posts.
By default the front page of the blog is the Page that displays all posts in your blog. You can create a static front page and have your published posts display on another page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ but doing that does not change what follows.
Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
This guide will walk you through how to create category pages for your blog, to display groupings of similar posts on pages other than your front page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
Create a custom menu
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#creating-a-custom-menu
Add dynamic categories and sub-categories pages to it
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages
Create order and sub-menus (dropdowns)
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menusHere’s a link to my post on this http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/
There are many common errors, misunderstandings and misconceptions when creating custom menus and there are some tweaks you can use to improve your custom menu as well.

@megz, when you use images in posts, folks normally put the attribution in the caption or at the end of the post. Either’s fine, as long as it’s *somewhere* in the post. And as for text widgets, you can have as many as you want.
As for finding licensing info, it depends. For images on Flickr, look to the bottom left of the page. On Wikipedia/media, scroll all the way to the bottom. For other sites, you’ll just need to look around a bit :)

Yeayyy I changed the header and I am loving it :)

@michelleweber
I liked helping and you’re welcome. I got two posts published this morning on my blogging tips blog. One is my inside story part 2 of the Zero to Hero Challenge which includes a Hero theme song video. :) The other one flowed from the idea of finding ways to include the crusty old long time bloggers like me in the challenge. I’m off to get my new eyeglasses – yay! I’ll help when I can but today is a busy day for me. -
I did it!! I am so pleased I worked out the techy side of things. If somebody can please tell me if it looks OK I would love to know.

I am a bit behind (day 6) but so far it seems manageable. I have already changed my theme to something more commensurate with my personality, ideas, and writing style. That was very good advice from the team. My best regards to all who endeavor to make it to day 30. By then, I hope to have developed the habit of posting daily.

It took me some time to find a background I like, which reflects part of Chinese culture, take a look at it:

@lunacooler thank you! I see that someone has already answered your question.
I checked out your blog too. Nice header!!! And you have a really cool name – Moon Star Ice all in one :)
