Zero to Hero: Day Six

Phew….finally complete! I’ve always had a “Custom Travel Map” Menu on my blog but didn’t get a chance to add a post to it. Today was the day!

I used MapBox and it took me a while, but I LOVE the final product and I think it’s going to be really useful for travelers.

    Enjoy!

@suzylins, up to you. Most folks typically respond in writing to comments only. Personally, I respond to comments, but will visit the blogs of Likers, and like/follow in return if I’m interested.

@nematheresa, awesome! Always like seeing more poetry :)

@kristina, love love love the map — really nice touch! (And timely, since I’m hoping to get there in the spring!)

Hi guys, I tried something new today by adding a quote (which I have done once before but it didn’t really work)

Check out my blog about all things travel and discovery at:

I also included a video of the band Stephen Speaks. Lovely :-)

I have been adding images to all of my posts, and it has been working just fine. Here’s todays post: http://wp.me/p4bJUq-1D

Only issue, I don’t think I have centered the theme of my page, so I am not getting any followers. I’m making content and so forth, but perhaps it’s too jumbled? Can you guys check it out and let me know, I’m trying to blog about all the China and Chinese stuff I go view throughout the day, and some techniques to make the learning process a bit smoother. Let me know, all feedback it welcome!

After a few tries, I finally managed to upload a video to youtube and then link it to my blog, check it out! http://thirteen1999.wordpress.com/2014/01/07/please-excuse-my-feet/

Funny that I had decided last night to include an image in my next post. It is something I wanted to do, but my focus has been on writing consistently and content. I am glad I am participating in this challenge, as my tendency is to either try to do much too soon, or to get stuck in a rut. This is helping me slowly and steadily improve my blog. I am getting into a routine. I read the day’s challenge, think about it for awhile, and then I tackle the day’s challenge. When I’m done, I post on my blog (if it wasn’t part of the assignment), come by and read the forum posts, and finally relax by checking out other bloggers’ posts. I just sort of got into this groove. I’m very happy with my productivity!

You know, I’m seeing comments on this forum thread from more versatile bloggers whose blog’s posts have more variety to them. Which is good! For a loooong time I was so confined to text. Text, text, text, and that was it, because I thought it far too inconvenient to take pictures and upload photos and all that. I didn’t know how to do that. But now I’m branching out to different post formats, and Day 6 was really a booster. I hope there can be more themes that support all post formats, though.

This challenge came at just the right time! I was writing a book review and this made me add something into the review that I am hoping is perfect for adding that special punch – gifs!

(Plus, I’ve added videos, galleries and music to my posts before but I have never added gifs and was just aching for the chance to use them)

Check out my post (a review about the Divergent series), complete with gifs, at: http://thegreatgabsby.wordpress.com/2014/01/07/book-review-the-divergent-trilogy/

Your design is basic. But there is nothing that would keep me from subscribing to a blog that looks like yours does. The content is easy to read.

So it may just be a matter of connecting with those who are interested in your subject matter.

This is what I do as well.

So I linked to some of my favourite recipes from Pinterest. I’d been wondering how to do this and, well, very simple.

One question – if anyone out there knows. I couldn’t centre the pin pictures. I tried just to hit centre, but then it messed it up. Any way to do that? Or to have them aligned left or right with text wrapping around?

    Thanks!

  • As a note to those who are having trouble with embeds. Here is one thing that I noticed someone was doing. Instead of entering just the URL, this is what was being entered (in the text view of the post editor):

    <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-size: medium;">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bmhjf0rKe8</span></span>

This is the kind of thing you often see if someone has copied and pasted from a word processing or other type of program that inserts its own styling HTML.

And it will result in a linked URL showing up in the visual editor (and in the post if you click “publish”) instead of the embedded video. Please double check your post in the text view if you are having embed problems and make sure that you ONLY have the URL there.

(the video at that URL is a cute kitten video in case anyone cares)

If you find you have not gotten an image laid out the way you want, there’s an easy fix. Go to the “edit” view for that post (either by clicking “edit” on the post or going to “posts” in your Dashboard and clicking on the “edit” link under the post). Once there, click once on the image you need realigned. You will see two little icons appear. Click the one that looks like a little picture. That will bring you to a pop up with alignment and other layout options for that image. Choose the alignment you are looking for and click the update button on the bottom.

I think some lame jokes can help this post. Ok maybe this wasn’t really the element I was planning but note-taking isn’t that big of a topic.

I think it took me all day to get this post right. I spent 3 hrs this evening, maybe more getting it right. I wanted so very much to add in music, that didn’t work out. I tried also to add a video, fail again. Then it occurred to me that my something g different was exposing something really important. My new element would be adding lots of pictures which I did. In the end, I am proud of what I posted. In the future, I’d really like to learn the music adding and video sharing. I’m such a novice… any hoo, today’s post. Go see!!!
