Zero to Hero: Day Ten

I’d like to add an Archives Widget with my “Categories” as the drop downs, but why won’t it show? My archives widget now only constitutes the Month and year.

I know from http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/ that <iframe> is not allowed for security reasons. However, so many sites use it to generate embed code. Is there no better solution or standard? I appreciate that WP has so many shortcodes, but not every site is covered by those.

Traveled down a long road called “Trial and Error” before I figured out how to do the Category Widgets but I got a good start on them earlier in the week. I love for things to be organized and these really make the blog a lot smoother.

@michelleweber My about page finally done. Your thoughts always appreciated. theotherpalette.com

@lunacooler
I’m not sure if I’m classified as a new blogger or not. I have over 2 and a half months of blogging under my belt. Is that new? I think im new but possibly not as new as others here. -
I especially like the twitter timeline widget, which allows me update what is going on in a simple, clear way.

@camilladean I like the two sidebars and also enjoyed your stories. Seems weird that we are suffering from nearly 40degrees Celsius temps and can’t keep cool here while you are freezing over there!!
@michelleweber thanks for the congrats!

@nematheresa I think what you’re after is the Categories Widget – you can get a drop down menu with all your categories. I’ve used it for a while now and love it.
I’m passing on today’s task, simply because I’ve been fiddling around with widgets a lot in the past. I revisited them just a few days ago and am still quite happy with them. Looking forward to seeing how others make use of them though and still enjoying zerotohero :)

michelleweber, before when I would be in the process of writing my posts, below it would show up websites that were similar to mine or about the same topic, then I could click on them to add them at the bottom of my post if I wanted to. Now they have disappeared and they choices don’t show up anymore. I’m not sure if I disabled them somewhere or what’s different. Not sure what you would call it, I thought pingback but I guess I’m wrong. I’m honestly not sure, I don’t know if I’m making what I’m trying to describe clear enough. :-/

Being Saturday, and being a bit of dark and gloom outside, I took advantage and did a few of the tasks today. I revisited themes and customised a new one. Yay. I added 2 new widgets: one that links to a nifty new feature page and a category widget. I’m loving these (not always) bite-sized tasks. I’m really enjoying checking out as many other zero to hero participants as I can. My daughter created my custom banner for me about 4 months ago and I love it. :-)

@camilladean – The double sidebar works really well because of the way you have them organised, I think. They don’t look cluttered and the information seems to flow.
Loved what you said about your Grandpa and about how those who are away are still with us. Blog looks good! -
After playing around with the other widgets for a while, I decided to stay with my minimal look. Search, Follow, Archives, and Collections are enough for the main menu. I also used two custom menus for the blogs that I follow and promote as well as a link to my training.

I think I’ve gone overboard with the widgets. I’d really appreciate any advice on what to leave out. Here’s my blog: http://lorenrhoads.com/2014/01/11/widgety/

I make my own widgets using PhotoScape. It’s still a work-in progress, so I have a feeling it’s going to change soon.

Whoops! Don’t know how that got posted twice and can’t seem to delete the second one. My apologies.

Wow, this challenge is really great for “forcing” me to do things I’ve always wanted to but never got around to.
I’ve finally tidied up my categories and created a page for all the categories to be listed, as well as Photoshopped some icons for each category. Of course, in accordance to today’s theme, I’ve also added icons for the “About” and “Category” pages as widgets to my sidebar.
I’m still far from done with making all the widgets (coming up soon – blogrolls! Other random stuff!) but I’m pretty happy with my efforts today. Especially because I’m so terrible at photoshop.
Do take a look and let me know what you think!
