Zero to Hero: Day Twenty-Five
-
I have been following http://dailypost.wordpress.com/ , and I love its layout, which put the date and category of each post on its left side. I wonder how such layout can be done?
The Chinese new year, the year of horse, is coming. I have changed the header of my blog to accommodate it.

Well, I looked around–and boy there are some talented designers here! I am not one! I played around with colors–again! and font styles–again! and I added a custom image–one that I love! –so miminally, I’ve met the requirements. I finally got my menu fonts darker, so I don’t want to mess with that! LOL But I am not in love with my background color–but can’t seem to change it–will keep working on it–don’t want a busy theme behind it. I want my site to feel warm–from the heart of curse, yet not too semtimental,I want to seem knowledgeable too! LOL
A question–the image I uploaded is a square picture–a poster with a saying on it that I love and that I think speaks tomy goal in blogging. It would really be a custom feature if I could figure out how to edit it into the shape of a heart! Anyone out there who can tell me how to–or where to go to learn to edit a square picture into the shape of a heart? Thanks, Helen

That Staff blog is wearing a premium theme called Linen.

Had some trouble with Flounder theme. Changed to Writr theme and customized the fonts and the background picture. Tested the social media buttons of the Writr theme but will not use theme. Implemented the twitter-timeline instead. That’s enough for the moment. If you use the gratis possibilities of the customizer you can improve your blog a lot. Via upgrade you can change fonts and colors. It’s amazing which tools are on board.

I kind of went a different way and looked at the blogs of people on Freshly Pressed. I saw a few who had custom badges for their links to social media. So I took a quick stop at Photoshop and created my own badges and I think they look really nice. Let me know what you think.

Understand that what I post is just a matter of personal taste. I intensely dislike HUGE social networking icons. I prefer small ones. -
@psychoticincognito
You changed a lot on your site since my last visit. The header is brillant. The social media buttons a bit smal ;-)) Really good layout! -
@anamelio I really like some of the touches on your blog, especially the widgets.
I am trying to get brave enough to customise Twitter, Facebook buttons. Looks daunting but found lots of guidance on the forums, wish me luck.
Is there anyway to embed text widgets into a page, like the about page, as well as the sidebar? I have seen this on a few blogs but I think it is the visual blogs with one column.

My boyfriend is an amazing graphic designer. I think he needs to get to work and design me a custom header and background and images for my widgets. He is currently customizing our Stone Bridge Antiques site. It may take a while (you can’t rush perfection, he tells me) but I think we can come up with something fun.
Thanks for the ideas!

No you cannot embed any widget into any page or post. Yes, you can use the code for social networking icons to display in any post or page. You capture the images of the cons and then link each one to your profile on the matching social network. Take a look here http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/08/06/social-media-icons-for-wordpress-com-blogs/

@michelleweber, not sure who to report this to, but the index and anchors are incorrect for #24. (Index says “twenty-three”, anchor name attribute is “25”.)

I changed my header text color from gray to an orange, to still fit with my theme of colors. Also, I added a background picture that you can see when you are at the top of the page. :) Check it out!

@psychoticigcognito, i think you’re off to a good start, but you could refine them a bit — you have a ton of white space, which makes the large icons look a bit like they’re floating in blog-space :)
Things to think about:
– get rid of the widget titles to save space
– rectangular icons/images that will stack neatly (think the size of the zero/hero badge)
– put all badges/icons in a single image widget@amateurlee, thanks for the heads-up! Will fix now.

@noleksiak089, I like the color scheme, nice. I think you might want to play with the image, though — such big pieces are blocked by the actual posts and sidebar (including your SO’s eyes) that I feel like you could find a better way to display it.
If you want a background, I might try a subtle gray-on-gray pattern, or a B&W image, and then I’d put the image in my “about me” widget.
Just a thought!

I started my personal blog the Verve Curve to learn about blogging. The Zero to Hero challenge came at just the right moment. Ive been working on a second blog for my job to try to have an increased my internet presence and have a forum to communicate information.
I would greatly appreciate some feedback from bloggers as I’ve launched it and feeling I should hold back until I’m more confident.
I had to take time out last week with my mother in hospital so Ive some catching up to do on Zero to Hero and todays assignment will be a good one to get me going again.my work blog
Many thanks Jenn -

Serendipity! A couple of days ago, thanks to another zero to hero blogger, I tried my hand at making a logo. I put it in my header. Then I moved it to a widget to make more room to see recent posts on my front page. Problem is, my premium theme does not support front page widgets so this morning, before I read the challenge, I stuck it back into my header. It’s real rudimentary but I think I like it. If only I could fit a burger and fries in the little bird’s basket!
