Zip filetype

Yes, I know that it’s not supported at this moment. Let it be an optional feature, for reasonable price. Plus, files could be checked by some antivirus for safe sharing.

Maybe I just haven’t understood the answer, but why do we need ftp? I mean importing zip files to media library, the same way as it works with pdf, video files (optionally) etc. E.g. I’d like to share a visio drawing (vsd) or autocad drawing (dxf) or whatever – I could just zip it and use download link in my post on my own risk.
Currently only these types are allowed: jpg, jpeg, png, gif, pdf, doc, ppt, odt, pptx, docx, pps, ppsx, xls, xlsx. That’s all. -
Hi there,
I’m sorry I was off-track and I have flagged this thread for a Staff response. -
For others here are the accepted file types: http://en.support.wordpress.com/accepted-filetypes/
As I understand it – it is a security issue – all anti-virus software can be beat – I regularly get files that beat my McAfee AV that McAfee later figures out were bad files – had I clicked or unzipped the file my system would have been corrupted –
What you could do is request for a new file type to be added for the base program such as Auto Cad – I ask for a new file type to be added some time back for a common program and they added it after a while – the thing to keep in mind is that WordPress.COM is security conscious to the point of paranoia – with 31,000,000 blogs and some of the biggest names such as CNN hosted here a crash would be real bad.

I understand that it may affect millions of people :). It’s almost impossible to know what file types may be needed. E.g. xml, msi or even exe – anything can be zipped. If someone is going to share some file of unsupported type I think that he/she will have to take responsibility and will think twice if he/she has to pay for this option (file storage & virus testing). Just an idea.

You could also put the files on another host and link to the file on the outside host host – you do need to be a bit careful about who you link to – places that have no respect for copyrights are bad (such as MegaUpload) – but you might be able to use something like Drop Box – their base account is free I think.
Yes more work I know.
