Zuki Theme – HELP! why won't my site look like the demo???
-
Featured images are added using a special module found, by default, in the right sidebar of the post or page editor. They aren’t added to post/page content.
-
SEE?! that’s one of those “D, E, F” things that isn’t mentioned.
i insert my post’s images in the post’s text box and use the “add media” tab at the the top.
-
OMGOSH @musicdoc1!!!! i think i love you!!!!
i now have my big ass image on the front page slider and my blog post smaller images!!!
::::doing happy dance::::!!!
NOW….. how do i get that UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER to show tabs like in the Demo and on this site http://coeliacgal.com/???
-
Glad you got your featured images working!
To add a second menu at the top right, follow these instructions:
You can further customize Zuki by using Custom Menus, which offers three Custom Menu areas. First you can create and choose a Custom Menu for your Primary menu, which is the big centered menu with the serif font in the Zuki header area. You can create your Custom Menu and assign it to the “Primary Menu” area.
If you like, you can create a small additional Header Top menu, which appears at the top right of the Zuki header. This menu area does not support sub-menus.
-
Here’s the guide to creating custom menus in WordPress:
And the Zuki support page is where the guide above is from. If you scroll down to “Custom Menus” there’s a screenshot there as well:

Great!
SEE?! that’s one of those “D, E, F” things that isn’t mentioned.
Yes, it’s certainly easy to miss things like that if you’re not very familiar with the setup of the theme guides. There’s a link to the WordPress support page on “featured images” under Features in the right sidebar of the guide, and another link to the same page in a section of the guide, “Custom Recent Post Widgets,” above the relevant section.
NOW….. how do i get that UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER to show tabs like in the Demo and on this site http://coeliacgal.com/???
I think you’re referring to the three bar icon which opens the drop-down menu. You do have that, but it depends on the monitor dimensions, and zoom and screen resolution settings of the visitor. On my 12″ X 9″ monitor I see the three bar icon, which drops down to display your menu.
It’s unusual to see both the vertical and horizontal menus in the header area, as seen in the demo and the other example you gave. I guess each are using two custom menus. See kathrynwp’s posts above.
-
Amendment: The two header area menus, vertical and horizontal, used by http://coeliacgal.com/ are a bit unusual because they contain the same links, in different orders, except for the “home” link which is only in the three-bar menu. The two header menus in the demo contain different links.

SWEET BABY IT WORKED!! got my top right menus!!!
i have just a bit more tweaking to do, then all should be alright with my world.
thank you SO much for your incredible patience and help. i have been feeling like a total moron.
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m not sure where to post this, but as this is one of several support sections I turned to when faced with the hours-long challenge of customizing my “menu” on my Pilcrow-theme blog (www.pamelamartinwriter.wordpress.com), I thought I put it here.
WordPress, I love you. You create a beautiful product. But as I’ve said in the past (I’ve been on WP since ’09 in various blog incarnations), your site is not for blog sissies.
No way, no how. Even for bloggers like myself who are not new to WP.
I’ve been blogging on writing, on a new blog, since last fall, and frustrated with my inability to get my blog to “look like” the one shown in the Pilcrow theme photo–that is, to have multiple “tabs” or “categories” at the top–for months now. Today, I decided to finally figure this out–come hell or high water–and I did.
How, I’m not sure. At one point, I found myself declaring that if we put men on the moon decades ago, that I could figure this out.
Frustrated by my inability to figure this out myself, I turned to Support and Forums. Not getting far, I shifted to a slightly different topic and an answer given by WP support person (“Timethief”–who is very clear, by the way), began to make sense. In her answer, which I can’t locate now, she linked to this post from a couple years ago that really helped: https://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/
And this–finally, amazingly, incredibly–got me into a position where I created–by a click here and a click there–ONE MORE TAB in my Pilcrow MENU.
Yea!
This was not rocket science; it wasn’t even difficult or time consuming once: 1) terminology was clarified, and 2) reference was made to “categories”.
Please, WP folks, as much as you do create a beautiful blog platform, try to remember that often less is more. With the relatively simple clarification of what a “menu” is, and how one can add “tabs” or “categories” to it, it all came into focus for me. I do think this topic can be simplified, and that the steps one needs to take to create tabs within a menu can be made more intuitive.
Thanks for listening, and for all you do!

Ack, I shouted “yea” too soon. The post that I created and put under my newly-created menu tab (“Stories & More”) is now, also, showing up under my “home” section, in other words on my main feed.
Anyone have any ideas how to get it out of “home”?
(Why create a separate tab if a post is going to show up also in home?)
Thanks so much!!

@ wellcraftedtoo,
I think it would be better if you start a new topic. This topic primarily involves creating featured images and assigning posts as featured content in a post slider, which are unrelated to your primary issue.
In a nutshell, though, what you describe is normal. Your home page displays all posts. The link “”Stories & More” goes to a category archives page, which will include only posts that have that category assigned to them. The archives page content is drawn from all posts, which are displayed in reverse chronological order on the home page. The content of the archives page is a subset of the content of the home page.
You might want to look into using a static front page, if having a post displayed multiple times is an issue for you.

Lynnette – I’m glad you’re well on your way now. Your site is looking lovely! If you need further help with anything else please feel free to start a new thread.
wellcraftedtoo – I hear you about the challenges getting a new site to look like the theme demo. That’s something we’re working on making easier.
As musicdoc1 said, the main blog feed includes all posts, and doesn’t hide certain posts that happen to be in a particular category you’ve added as a menu item.
If you need further help with your issue, could you start a new thread as musicdoc1 suggested? It’ll be easier to help you there, rather than in Lynnette’s already-long thread about customizing Zuki. Thanks a lot!
-
actually i did start a new thread last night. musicdoc1 suggested something and it worked. unfortunately it was something completely different that wasn’t in the actual ‘how to’ steps.
not everyone is a tech guru and can just “know” how to do things or have all these little trick in their magic bag.
it’s VERY frustrating to the novice.but again, thank you SOOOO much for all you time and patience, Kathryn!!

Thanks much, musicdoc1 and kathrynwp, for your comments.
Yes, it makes sense to start a new topic–I was so frazzled yesterday evening that the thought of that seemed too much. I will do that if, after looking into this issue more, it seems I still need help.
I did poke around more yesterday evening in forums and support, and did conclude that it looks like if a blogger does not want content showing up in both her/his main feed (“home” for me) and a separate tag/category, that a static front page is called for. Setting up a static home page sounds a bit daunting, so, for now, I’ll let that go.
Thanks again for your help, and for all you do here.

No worries, Pamela. Setting up a static front page is not actually that hard, and I’d be glad to guide you through it if you’d like to start a new topic. :) In the meantime, the step-by-step guide is here:
Feel free to post if you get stuck along the way:

Thanks again, kathrynwp, just seeing your reply now.
I’ve bookmarked the ‘front page’ page, but am now striding on to attempting to have a tag line appear under my blog name (“a blog by—“). Not sure why but have been having problems with this…I will prevail…!! ;=)
