Bio
Ashley Davidoff is a physician and artist who lives with his wife Naomi and four children in Newton Massachusetts. His work combines the beauty of nature with the internal beauty of the body. As a radiologist, he explores the complexity and beauty of the body in both health and disease. As a gardener, he derives inspiration from the recurring miracles of the flower, the innate logic of roots and branches, and the intense cycles of New England nature. And as a dancer, he explores the soul.
The artist's creativity was launched in his youth in South Africa, where Dr. Davidoff learned the importance of expression in tap and flamenco dance. It has continued through his professional and personal life, and his love of form and function, beauty of nature and the power of the creative soul are continually expressed through his works.
The driving intellectual force is focused in a program called The Common Vein, which unites art, nature and biology. This web-based educational program emphasizes simplicity of principles that underlie the complexity of detail in biology and medicine www.thecommonvein.com. Conventional medical images are augmented with colorful artistic renderings. Some are used to portray concepts (a picture speaks a thousand words) and others are used to display the beauty of biology. Each year he chooses one organ to present at a national radiology meeting for which he has received multiple awards. His work is on display in the Boston Museum of Science and has been highlighted on the television newsmagazine show Chronicle. Selected images from the common vein are displayed in artinbiology.com which can be purchased.
Dr. Davidoff's multicultural background and interdisciplinary creativity proavide a unique and exciting perspective on biology, medicine and art.
