Bio
I am a mother and wife first and foremost, having 5 kids from the ages of 21 to 6. Included in that group of kids is a set of twins. My second passion is art of all types. Going to college first to teach graphic arts, I found myself not satisfied with the curriculum. Although, I still have a passion to draw. So, I have changed gears and went into English/Language Arts for middle and high school students. I am pursuing this degree from Grand Canyon University. Literature for me is the embodiment of the human spirit for all to read and understand.
Multicultural Literature is the basis for teaching young adults about how people have lived. Encompassing past, present, and possibly future happenings. Multicultural includes fiction works and non-fiction works throughout history. The most fascinating aspect of literature is the inclusion of other elements of media today. Books turned into movies gives classes a great comparison point to how the author wrote the pages, to how we translate those pages into media.
I grew up in a very rural community. The nearest towns were less than 1,000 people. As with most small communities, there was not a lot of resources for kids to explore the world. I loved the days that Mom took us to the town library. The smell of life and history in each of those books.
Today’s youth in the same community have a world of access to the global community. Books, short stories, information on authors are all online and accessible to everyone. More people move in and out of town than ever before. Creating a link to other regions of the country and their cultures. Like the family from Georgia, I see different cultural norms in the kids’ mannerisms and interactions with other students. If only the rest of the kids would follow suite!
Global literature includes more than just books from around the world. It includes intermixing of cultural histories. An understanding of people’s views and feelings about the world they live in. Today we see through media more of the world and how people live than ever before. People are moving to many different regions and taking their culture with them. This creates a cultural blending that shows in literature. Like the blending of cultures during the 1800-1900’s with exploration of the new world and the occupation of territories of Africa.
The blending of different cultures and different religions can cause struggles within the different groups of people. Some of the hardest literature to read, because of the extreme conditions, relates to the Holocaust. Today’s students can find ways to relate to people from history through the books they read. They can see how other people live and compare it with the struggles they deal with every day.
