Bio
Alison Johnson, B.A., M.S., graduated from Carleton College summa cum laude and studied mathematics at the Sorbonne on a National Science Foundation Fellowship. She received an M. S. in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. In 2000 she received a Distinguished Achievement Award from Carleton College.
Johnson has maintained wide-ranging professional interests and has found such variety a stimulus to her creative work. She has written three biographies: Wallace Stevens: A Dual Life as Poet and Insurance Executive, Henry James: His Life Revealed in His Letters, and Louis XVI and the French Revolution. Warren Buffett endorsed her family memoir, which is centered around her father, who amassed two tons of gold and silver coins in a tiny town in Nebraska because he was convinced that the economy was about to collapse. Johnson has produced and directed an acclaimed documentary titled The World of Wallace Stevens and many documentaries dealing with chemical sensitivity. These include the following titles: Fragrance-Free Workplaces; Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: How Chemical Exposures May Be Affecting Your Health; Gulf War Syndrome: Aftermath of a Toxic Battlefield; and The Toxic Clouds of 9/11: A Looming Health Disaster. Her books include Casualties of Progress: Personal Histories from the Chemically Sensitive; Gulf War Syndrome: Legacy of a Perfect War; and Amputated Lives: Coping with Chemical Sensitivity. Johnson chairs the Chemical Sensitivity Foundation. She lives in midcoast Maine.
