Bio
I was born and raised in Finland, bilingual in Swedish and Finnish. My research interests are syntactic theory and comparative syntax. The general idea is to figure out what the fundamental properties of human language are by comparing the grammatical systems of languages. I have particular expertise in Swedish and Finnish syntax, but I've worked on a range of other languages, too, and a variety of topics. Since 2004 I've been Professor of Theoretical Linguistics at Newcastle University, UK. In this period I have collaborated closely on various projects with colleagues in Cambridge, which has resulted in a number of co-authored works on syntactic cross-linguistic variation in a minimalist framework, including two books. Another recent work of mine is a book on the syntax of answers to yes-no questions in a cross-linguistic, comparative perspective. I’m particularly proud of having (co-)supervised 32 PhD students to completion, most of them at Newcastle.
Together with Balazs Suranyi, I am editor of the journal Finno-Ugric Languages and Linguistics.
