Bio
Andruid Kerne is a research artist-scientist investigating how to involve machines in supporting human experiences of personal expression, creative process, and social engagement. He creates interactive dynamics of participation through expressive interfaces, distributed systems, information environments, installations, and performances. Kerne seeks to open the range of social processes embodied by computational artifacts, for instance substantiating play as a mode of activity and interaction. He represents intercultural relationships by juxtaposing world views, and developing intercultural digital collections and semantics. He relates process and product, as well as theory and practice, in strange loops of self-reference. He challenges normal subordinations, such as the visual over the auditory, science and economy over creativity and commons, narrative over rhythm, and the technological over the folkloric.
His research is grounded in interface ecology. The interface ecosystems meta-framework connects theory and practice to construct the interface as a border zone between heterogeneous systems of representation: personal and machinic, physical and electronic, analog and digital, media and methodologies. Forms and processes are transformed by investigation of new connections between systems.
