Bio
Sportswriting has been my passion for more than two decades, and writing in general has been my love going all the way back to third grade when my teacher, Mrs. Smith, read one of my short stories and told my mother that this was my future.
Four decades later, after a long and winding road that took me to three different colleges with a five-year detour in the United States Navy thrown in there for good measure, I can honestly say that I have lived my dream. As a newspaper, magazine and online sportswriter for 24 years, I’ve covered Super Bowls, Stanley Cup Playoffs, NBA Playoffs, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, Winter Olympic Games, college football bowl games and national championships, PGA and Senior PGA events, tennis, horse racing, powerboat racing, boxing and just about every sport imaginable. I spent seven years writing directly for one of the most storied NFL franchises, the Miami Dolphins.
Telling other people’s stories has been more rewarding than I ever could have imagined, but now that I get to watch sports through the eyes of my 11-year-old son and experience the joy, pain and — sadly — the drama of youth sports, it has opened a new window for me. So the purpose of this blog is to help shed light on both what is wrong in youth sports today and also what is right, while finding a way to turn the pertinent topics prevalent in the sports news into an educational lesson for this generation’s future athletes, even if their sports endeavors only take them as far as high school. I also hope to tell the behind-the-scenes stories of some high-profile sports dads — professional athletes, coaches and front office personnel.
So welcome to a revolutionary new blog designed to take the growing network of dad bloggers to new heights and shed a brighter light on the important role dads need to continue to play in the lives of their children. Though sports is prominent in the title, this blog will touch on every conceivable topic relevant to fatherhood and hopefully inspire a return to the core family values needed in today’s high-stress, high-tech world. Come along for the ride!
