Injuries:
During my career as a college decathlete I suffered from chronic nagging injuries. When one injury would heal another would inflict me. However, in the summers when I would take I month off, I would be totally healthy & feel stronger & faster. What I didn't realize until after my career had ended was that in the summers not only was I taking time off but I was also TAKING MY SHOES OFF. I spent most of my time barefoot. The injuries were gone, my feet were strong, my body was in balance, and I was fast! But as soon as I would start my Fall training I would put my shoes back on, and the injuries would crop back up. Does this sound like anything you've heard before?
Technique:
When I was competing for University of Arizona, our coach had us do one training session a week without shoes. My whole career I struggled with my running form & posture. My coach worked on this with me over & over again. During the barefoot training sessions my coach would be in AWE of how much better my form was. But as soon as I put my running shoes back on I would lose it all. I couldn't figure it out. It seems like a simple explanation but I was always told you have to wear running shoes to train in; and therefore I figured my shoes couldn't be at fault. Not until now do I realize the truth that it was my SHOES that were FORCING ME TO RUN WRONG.
