Bio
I am a native Athenian. I went to a Greek state school, in a mixed residential neighbourhood near the centre of Athens. I was educated abroad to postgraduate level. Some of my studies were in policy and political science, but that is not my professional field. I have lived about 50% of my life outside Greece, coming and going. I spent several months over the last two years in Athens plotting my return. For now I remain, like the title of a much quoted but much less watched Greek art movie, in the Suspended Step of the Stork.
I am a self-confessed news junkie. I follow the media reports from a variety of sources, from the financial press which is my professional reading, to Greek junk TV. This is not a substitute for factual research and what anthropologists call “participant observation”. I don’t believe you can understand events by watching demonstrations (full-blown riots if you’re lucky) from the balcony of the Hilton or the Grande Bretagne Hotel while normal life continues a few blocks away, or by dipping into the token “working class” neighbourhood for a few vox pops with picturesque old geezers on the way in from the airport, or by chasing political insiders for a gossipy insight. That is the lot of the press correspondent.
This blog is simply my attempt to give an informed view of events in Greece through Greek eyes.
