Bio
Nora and Sarah met teaching together at a public high school in Manhattan in 2012. We taught algebra together for three years and refined our teaching strategies, pedagogy, and political theory collaboratively. This blog became a site for us to work out our ideas and grow together.
We believe that our work as special educators is both personal and political. We recognize that our identities, intersectional systems of oppression, and national policy impact our work and our students. We are interested in how identity (both ours and our students') impact experiences and exchanges in the classroom - with a specific focus on race, class, gender, and dis/ability.
The on-the-ground realities of a special education teacher do not always line up with what folks imagine. Our blog is a peek into what the realities are, and why they matter.
Our philosophy about providing pencils for students is consistently evolving.
