Bio
B. Donaldson Gowans was born and educated in Dundee, on the North East coast of Scotland. He’s been writing, on and off, since an inspirational young teacher at his Primary School encouraged an interest in words and creative writing. He wrote reflective poetry for most of his life, some might say as a cathartic balance to his day job in the police force. He returns to it now and then, but his main focus is on “rhyming tales” for kids.
As a child he watched his late aunt “Nettie” convulse family gatherings with her renditions of humorous Scottish favourites like “The Reekin’ Lum” and “Feed the Brute”. He also found something hugely engaging about the work and performances of popular rhyming poets - and in the children’s authors who entertained his young son - all of which combined to convince him THIS was the style he wanted to work in.
For the past 15 years or so a variety of characters have emerged from his pen and retirement from his “day job” has provided the opportunity to connect his work to a wider audience. He particularly enjoys creating humorous characters – usually animals – that make us laugh with their unfortunate predicaments, but often end up teaching a lesson or two.
He has written about beavers, owls, rabbits, geese, bears, pigs, cows, mice, seagulls, and donkeys to name but a few. They all show their particular animal traits in hilarious verse.
He lives in Dundee with his wife, 5 guitars and a mandolin. They have a grown-up son.
