Bio
My name is Don Frost. I have a B.S. in journalism from Bradley University, but I began earning my journalism chops writing feature stories for a year and a half at the Quantico Sentry, the base newspaper, when I was in the Marine Corps from 1966 to 1968. Somehow I skated combat in Viet Nam.
After my service I joined the Chicago Tribune where I was a writer/editor, primarily copy editor, for the next 26 years, winning a Lowell Thomas Award for travel writing in 1989. Then I joined the Chicago office of Universal Press Syndicate as managing editor of the Primary Color syndicated package of feature stories. When UPS folded the Chicago office I turned down a job in the UPS Kansas City office and continued helping Harriet Choice produce the Primary Color package as a consultant out of Chicago.
This 21st Century incarnation of Common Sense was born because I got tired of writing the occasional letters to editors and decided to set up my own soap box from which to vent. Also, since I took early retirement in 2000 I find I miss the smell and feel of the newsroom. Writing a blog is as close to reviving that feeling as I care to now.
I won’t offer new items for your perusal every day. That would be too much like work. Just drop in from time to time to see what – if anything – is new.
Those of you with a conservative social and political bent will generally like what I write; those with a liberal social and political bent . . . not so much. Like everyone else I dislike being labeled, but I’ll gladly accept the conservative tag. That nutshell comes closest to describing me, but it would be a mistake to assume I’ll always come down on the Right on everything. From time to time I’ll horrify the Right and stun the Left.
Nice thing about blogs: You can write anything you damn well feel like. So occasionally I’ll veer off into personal observations that have nothing whatever to do with the social/political milieu. Hopefully you’ll find these tangents entertaining, perhaps enlightening, or maybe simply fun. You might even come away thinking, “Well, the SOB’s a conservative, but at least he likes dogs and cats. He can’t be all bad.”
