Bio
BRCA1+ Mummy of 2
I’m 30 and I recently learned that I carry the BRCA1 gene mutation which puts me at a significantly higher risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer. I’m taking preventative action against my risk and my journey started this year with a double mastectomy. I will, in the years to follow also have my ovaries removed. As this is the start of a long and difficult road, I’d like to have a positive focus going forward.
I wanted to share my experiences so that anyone in a similar (or not) situation can take some comfort knowing there is a whole BRCA community out there ready to help support you should you need it. You are absolutely not on your own through this and if and when you're ready to share with the world, all your BRCA sisters (and brothers) will be holding your hand the whole way.
I also wanted to use it to show my children when they are older and approaching the age for genetic testing, to help reassure them.
I'm hoping that by sharing my experiences, it will in turn, help me through those tougher days. I'm not gonna lie, there have been a few! So this is my sort of therapy.
