Bio
Claire Aiello is happy to be part of the WHNT News 19 team. She joined the station in October 2001 as a news producer. Claire produced various newscasts until 2005, but then the web job opened up and she jumped at it. As the Interactive Content Manager she oversees the content on WHNT.com and our apps as well as our social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. Make sure you follow us on each of those platforms!
Claire is a two-time Emmy winner. She was awarded an Emmy in 2014 for her role in a weather special titled "Before The Storm: A Taking Action Special Report." She also won an Emmy in 2013 for her work on "Reflections: After The Storm," a team perspective on the April 2011 tornadoes that devastated Alabama.
In 2011 and 2009, Claire won the award for Best Web Journalism by the Alabama Associated Press Broadcasters Association. She was also nominated for an Emmy in 2011 for her web updates on the April 27 tornado outbreak and aftermath.
Prior to her career with WHNT, Claire worked at WJRD-TV in Tuscaloosa (now WVUA-TV.) There, she produced newscasts, ran the assignment desk from time to time, shot breaking news, and even a high school football game or two. During her time there, the Associated Press awarded her with Best Newscast honors.
Claire is a 1997 graduate of The University of Alabama, where she majored in broadcast journalism and minored in political science. She and her husband Joey met there and love to cheer on the Crimson Tide. They have been married since June 2001 and are blessed to have a son and a daughter.
Claire's hobbies include cooking and gardening. She's not great at either but tries to keep learning new things. Her current challenge in the garden is deterring deer who roam the neighborhood and eat anything they want overnight. If you have any ideas she would love suggestions. (Because, city limits + shooting deer = illegal.)
You'll see Claire most mornings at the Southeast YMCA and on the soccer fields with her daughter. She is a volunteer referee through AYSO Region 160. She and Joey are also active in their son's Cub Scout Pack. The Aiellos are also active members at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
