Bio
Dr. Joanny Liu is the founder and president of Harmoni Health which is a wellness centre based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Empowerment Coaching. She helps corporate leaders who are looking for natural solutions for their healthcare needs.
She is also the founder of the Transformational Leadership Institute, where she coaches corporate leaders to “Be the leader that you are.” This coaching program helps corporate leaders to identify the underlying origins of behaviour in themselves. The awareness gained and subsequent modification of certain behaviour catapults corporate leaders to transform their careers and their lives.
Harmoni Health is the only wellness centre in Calgary that provides full support to corporate leaders for their healthcare and their leadership abilities. The Mind Body connection is the ultimate relationship because that's the relationship that you have with your Self.
Dr. Joanny was in her mid-teens when she asked herself a crucial question. She didn’t like being sick, so, “How I do I keep well?” She dove into reading and teaching herself how to keep healthy and to prevent illness. At first she focused only on the physical. Later she found she had to take care of her mental faculties and finally, she learned how important it is to have purpose in life.
She is a former Professional Engineer and Information Technology professional where she spent almost 25 years developing the skills and aptitudes that prepared her to become a Doctor. During that period, she worked or consulted with major organizations such as Lavalin, Gulf Canada, TransCanada Pipelines, Canadian Pacific, Suncor Energy, Talisman Energy, Enmax, Transalta, and the Calgary Health Region.
During that time, she held several positions as a design engineer, senior engineer, business analyst, re-engineering specialist, project leader, and project manager. She worked with people at all levels of management, including senior management. Today she retains and uses that experience and wisdom that helps people in the corporate world attain the health and career success that they crave.
In 2004/05, she spearheaded a movement that stopped APEGGA from changing its policies that would allow people with bachelor of science degrees to do the work of Engineers. She led other APEGGA members to write letters to the PEGG to argue against the change. Then they attended the Annual General Meeting and each stood up and spoke to the attendees and to the board. The relief in the room was palpable. Further study stopped and the campaign dropped. Under her leadership and using the very same skills she teaches today, APEGGA is working the way it should – upholding high standards of conduct and public safety and professional responsibility.
In the 1990s, as a volunteer, Dr. Joanny chaired her community soccer program. She expanded the program from just one season to an all-year activity. She expanded the number of programs to include all-girls teams and several age groups. The number of children playing soccer in her community exploded from the low hundreds into thousands. Under her leadership and practicing the very same skills she teaches today, Calgary Minor Soccer Association at the time noted of the enthusiasm up north and knew that the future was bright for the sport.
In 2003, she decided to travel a different path. She decided to leave the corporate world to do something that would really make a difference in people’s lives. She spent a good month researching healthcare modalities and schools and also did some market research.
She settled on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is a different paradigm from other medical schools; having worked well over a decade in IT, she was used to dealing with new paradigms. At first, it was difficult to get her head and mind bent around it, but she gives her professors much credit for their willingness to answer all of her pesky questions. TCM has its own set of terminology and diagnostics. These terms must be taken into context with their paradigm and not literally. It took thousands of years of experimentation and experience that culminated in books that are at least two thousand years old. The medicine was already old when doctors wrote those books. They come from a time when people were closer to the nature, to their own truths, and the fact that no matter how much we try, we are a part of the environment and we can’t escape from it. Instead we learn to live within it, in harmony.
Dr. Joanny wanted to study a “complete” medicine. She wanted to treat as many people as possible, no matter what the ailment or concern. Quite frankly, TCM can, and is used to treat almost anything. What is most impressive is that there is always a reason why some one is ill; there is never a time when a TCM doctor will tell their patient that they don’t know what the problem is or worse, that they cannot help them. Once in treatment, it may take people a longer or shorter time to heal because healing is an individual process. Sometimes the cure doesn’t occur but the healing does, meaning that a person learns a few things about themselves that compel them to live a full life in any case. That’s the ultimate truth in letting go, which is not the same as giving up.
Dr. Joanny is a very hands on type of person, so this passion suits her just fine. She’s finally helping people in the way that is both gratifying and rewarding for both she and her clients. Who doesn’t want to live better?
Dr. Joanny is the author of her own ezine, “Human Potential” where she offers her hundreds of readers, thought compelling and contrarian views on healthcare. Healthcare is what she delivers, not sickcare. She teaches what health really looks like and what it does not.
Dr. Joanny Liu is a Registered Acupuncturist (RAc) and Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor (TCMD) in the province of Alberta and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).
