Bio
Mr. Cope is an accomplished litigator, having successfully served as lead counsel in multiple jury and bench trials. He represents individuals, business entities and local governments in matters generally involving civil litigation in both state and federal court. He also has an active divorce and child custody practice. He is admitted to practice in Tennessee state court as well as the United States District Court for the Middle and Eastern districts of Tennessee, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
In 2012, Mr. Cope was appointed to a six year term on the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) by Governor Bill Haslam. He presently serves as chairman of the commission. THEC is the coordinating body for Tennessee’s 51 public colleges, universities, and technology centers, which collectively educate approximately 245,000 students.
Mr. Cope is a graduate of the Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and received his undergraduate degree in political science, with a minor in history, from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. While at Rhodes, Mr. Cope completed the British Studies at Oxford University program during which he studied British history and government. Mr. Cope graduated from the University of Memphis School of Law where he received the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence in Trial Advocacy and served as a member of the Moot Court Board. While in law school, Mr. Cope clerked for the Honorable Robert L. (Butch) Childers, judge of the Circuit Court of Tennessee at Memphis.
Mr. Cope is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Murfreesboro, where he serves on the staff parish relations committee.
