Bio
My name is Debra Weiss. I have a Bachelors of Science in both Philosophy emphasis Religious Studies and Natural Resource Management from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Wisconsin having a tradition of producing great thinkers in conservation such as John Muir and Aldo Leopold.. I was nominated to both Sigma Alpha Pi and Society for Collegiate Leadership and Achievement. In addition to being a massive book nerd, I have a lifetime of private study on a wide range of topics.
I am originally from the East Coast; New Jersey, New York and New England area, although I spent many years traveling all over the U.S. I moved to Wisconsin 27 years ago, and fell in love with the Northwoods, the Northern Lights, and a people who have a tradition of living off the land.
I am a woman, a mother, a Van-lifer/Tiny Home enthusiast years before it was cool again. I have been homeless & slept in my car. Ive been a single mother; low income and on public assistance. I took a vow of poverty, and I am somewhat of a bohemian gypsy. I believe in the Rainbow Tribe, I am a wise fool, a wanderer, the girl in the woods telling fortunes and dancing, and a wolf girl howling with the pack late at night.
I am the owner of Ethereal Gardens, using agronomy, organic and biointensive techniques to restore a tornado devastated 20 acre parcel near the Harrison-Hewitt forest unit. I have 20 years experience organic gardening, I’ve lived off my own food off and on for 20 years, I am different because I work with the forest and not against it, I regard the forest as a living entity in and of itself,
I believe in affordable organics & social cooperatives. I am able to offer organic vegetables and herbs at such affordable prices because I dont have the overheard of a tractor. I was crushed by one years ago, frankly I hate the things. In years past Ethereal Gardens has offered a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), but due to an ongoing canary grass problem, I have limited shares to worker shares only. Ethereal Gardens is beyond organic,using no tractors, no fossil fuels, no pesticides or herbicides, even OMRI approved ones. Ethereal Gardens definitely does NOT use GMO.
In addition to agriculture, I have a lifetime of Foraging & Bushcrafting experience, and I use it to balance how I use my land, thus maintaining it in perpetuity. Many of the herbs Ethereal Gardens offers are in fact wild. I am a friend of all animals, Ethereal gardens is certified pollinator habitat and Wildlife habitat. I practice forest restoration as a natural resource manager.
In addition I am an Herbalist, my grandfather was an MD, and I am currently pursuing medicinal plants certificate thru eCornell. I learned the medicinal properties of food and herbs because I had to heal myself, as I was raised on the Standard American Diet (SAD) and had the health problems to show for it. 20 years studying western herbalism & Taoist medicine(including some immortality texts), or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) I now have no health problems. I was even accepted into the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine but unable to attend due to finances
I am the Owner and Chief (Only) Blogger at The Ravings of a Complete Lunatic, a blog since 2006 covering deep green philosophy, politics, magic, gardening & homesteading. I am a long time environmentalist, agitating for cleaning up environmental degradation and implementing green technologies, but also simplifying life, and returning to the wild.
10 years ago I ran for Wausau City Council, but I removed myself from the race after I saw the slander people who didn't even know me would say about me. I am the former Chair of the Commission for a Greener Tomorrow, a past committee of the City of Wausau's that was supposed to be it's citizen environmental advisory board. I am partially responsible for uncovering the now quite public pentachloraphenol/dioxin contamination on Wausau's lower west side. I became disillusioned after many years of service, as getting people to even care was a Herculean task, in addition I faced mysterious harassment and violations of my privacy, I have no doubt, because of the work I did uncovering industrial pollution.
So now I am of Buckminster Fuller’s school of thought when he said “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete” I work to solve the problems of poverty, to clean up and teach respect for Mother Earth. I condemn the divide between rich and poor, the corporate takeover of our government and the world, and favor less government, not more. I am not a conservative or a liberal. I am a former resident of DC and saw first hand things that most people would write off as conspiracy theory. It may only be a drop in the bucket, but my blog is all about telling the truth that is far too suppressed in our country, and hoping people wake up before it is too late. I hold Truth and Justice, as well as Love, sacred. I believe we must return to Nature & live as one of Earth’s many Creatures.
I am the Founder of Wausau Pagan Society. I am a Bard in the Order of Bards, Ovates & Druids (OBOD).I am a priestess and sworn to the service of the Earth and the Divine. In 2004,I knelt in the woods at Sylvan Hill Park in Wausau and swore by my blood to serve the Divine and Nature. I asked for the gift of oracular vision in return for my lifetime of service. Whether it has been as an environmentalist, a prison minister, or as a writer, I have lived up to those vows. I have found myself in the strangest places in my life, on the strangest paths, but I have learned to trust the Universe quite literally with my life, and it has shown me incredible things in return.
My first book covers ancient Goddesses and their stories and the Shamanistic rite of initiation...I am currently procrastinating mightily putting the finishing touches on it, "Tales from the Underworld".
