Bio
Sitename: “quilombo”: a free city of escaped slaves in the Brazilian rainforest, allied with aboriginals; some successfully fought off invading armies for decades. See the full story in Wikipedia and Galeano's “Memory of Fire”. To me it's a meme for ecojustice (ecology + social justice). I've been writing & fighting for it (peacefully, as a Quaker) 30 years now.
My bio: I'm of mixed parentage, age 81, a Depression/WW2 baby born in Toronto, raised in Halifax, worked all over Canada (and Arctic), retired in Montreal. What did I do for a living? In chronological order: was in Army, Airforce, Navy Reserve diver-navigator ages 10-26 (wanted to fire guns & fly, got smart later), NFB filmmaker, ombudsman, librarian, union organizer, & oral historian. A retired university professor, now fulltime unpaid Quaker agitator.
fdmillar, just call me David. I don't use F=Frederick, a family name going back 5 generations, stolen from the Hanoverian kings (Queen Liz' bunch). Grandpa said Millar was Gaelic for “I'm just a soldier” meaning “not a sheep-stealer, just a redcoat, one of the stormtroopers of Empire, on the winning side”. Very Scottish, that.
I'm like one of those old washing machines. Just plug me in and I agitate!
