Bio
Dr. Mark Johnson is the wildlife veterinarian and founder of Global Wildlife Resources (GWR) in Freeland, WA. Dr. Mark has two specialties. He specializes in wildlife capture and handling and provides the most current and extensive training in wildlife chemical capture. His courses are invaluable to college students, state/federal/tribal wildlife professionals, zoo caretakers, game farms, veterinary technicians, veterinarians, and animal control officers.
He also teaches humane dog capture and handling for animal rescue groups, animal shelters, animal control officers, and rabies eradication programs around the world.
Dr. Mark introduced the Y pole to the animal welfare community. It is a humane tool for handling fractious dogs in animal shelters and replaces most uses of the catch pole. The Y pole, when used in the manner prescribed by Dr. Mark, has the potential to change the culture of an animal shelter for kinder and more connected and compassionate dog handling.
Dr. Mark was Project Veterinarian for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 1995-96 gray wolf reintroduction program into Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho and was the wildlife veterinarian for Yellowstone National Park for four years - the first veterinarian working for NPS. He has taught canid capture and handling to the MN and Fargo Zoos and has worked closely with many captive wolf programs for over two decades.
His experience in handling wolves has led him to teach humane capture and handling of feral dogs around the world. This training is helping countries on every continent with rabies eradication programs & supporting humane methods for managing dog overpopulations. He assisted with three rescue trapping operations after Hurricane Katrina and his on-site courses include training in India and Palau.
Dr. Mark will be organizing all of his training in humane dog capture and handling through a website, Dog Capture and Care dot com. but he is currently focusing on producing online courses for wildlife chemical capture. He has produced training videos on humane dog capture and handling for the government of India with the collaboration of Vets Beyond Borders (VBB). Contact VBB for more information since they will be posting them on their website.
