Bio
Thomas Davis is an educator, poet, playwright, novelist, scholar, and environmentalist. He is currently the Dean of Instruction at Navajo Technical College, which has campuses in Crownpoint, New Mexico and Chinle, Arizona. In the past he has served as the President of Lac Courtes Oreilles Ojibwa Community College in Hayward, Wisconsin and Little Priest Tribal College in Winnebago, Nebraska. He founded College of the Menominee Nation with Dr. Verna Fowler, and was its first Vice President of Academic Affairs, in Keshena, Wisconsin.
Davis is married to the poet and artist Ethel Mortenson Davis and is father to two daughters, Sonja and Mary, and one son, Kevin, who in the web world was known as Alazanto. Kevin passed away in Poughkeepsie New York in 2010. He also has two granddaughters, Sophia and Phoebe, and two grandsons, William and Joseph, all of whom live in Wisconsin.
Davis's publication list is extensive. Sustaining the Forest, the People, and the Spirit is a non-fiction book by SUNY Press that explores how the Menominee Indian Tribe developed sustainable forestry practices and the values of a sustainably based society. Salt Bear is a novel for young people that creates a Western mythology that features salt bears, jackalopes, cactus bucks, a snow owl, a mad grizzly bear, a time-shifting mountain lion, and other creatures from Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. He has published poetry, had plays produced, written chapters for books, and published scholarly essays on American Indian education, technology as a force for economic development in Indian country, and high performance computing.
