Bio
Franco B. Mendoza
I have been creating artwork since I was a young man. I took a strong interest in drawing when I got into high school. Medias that I have worked with are: pencils, chalk pastels, and acrylic. My most recently found media, which I just cannot pull myself away from is working with clay. My artwork has always been a reflection of myself and embodies my culture, the history of my ancestors, and my ability to be creative.
I am Mexican-American and grew up with a rich history of my culture and ancestors. Growing up in the 70’s I was influenced by local Chicano Artists that taught at Sacramento State University where I was a student. The majority of my artwork reflects that of my culture and ancestors from the indigenous communities of Mexico and South America such as the Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, and Incas. I have always had a strong connection with my culture and ancestors and especially the detailed artistry they created. I find great pride in being able to interpret their stories of brotherhood, war, life and death into the pieces that I create today. Mexican artists that have inspired me are Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Jose G. Posada and Jose Clemente Orozco. Even though the majority of my artwork may be about my culture and history, I still am versatile and able to be creative and create pieces of artwork that are outside of my comfort zone.
As a retired peace officer, my interests and goals now are to continue to pursue my art education at Cosumnes River College where I am privileged to have the opportunity to be a student of Professor, Yoshio Taylor. I look forward to creating artwork experiencing various forms of clay media and I currently learning the artistry of wheel throwing.
