My story is all wrapped up in having had polio during the last bad epidemic in 1953.
I was 2, so I cannot recall life without it.
I’m one of the lucky ones though. Waking up paralyzed must have been terrifying but gratefully, I do not remember. Maybe it’s polio-residue when I have a feeling of panic and begin to hyperventilate if I cannot move my legs like when the sheets get too tight, for instance. I know that I was in an iron lung for a period of time. Who knows how many little idiosyncrasies come from things that happen so early that our memories are not clear?
I have resisted the idea of post-polio, at least when applying the possibility to myself--no way--not going to happen! In truth, I have less muscle strength in my upper left quad in the past few years and I can’t seem to exercise it back into shape. I still avoid crippling labels, but it means that I am working harder to do less. darn!
I have been a holistic practitioner for well over 30 years. Licensed as a medical massage therapist, I like to address tissue issues for immediate effect; massage is a satisfying health-giving modality.
But self-care is the secret behind success. Holistic thinking unites the mental with the physical aspects, addressing stressful negativity and replacing it by encouraging positive ways to heal. There are as many ways to do this as there are people who need it. My book, R&R: Rescue and Relief contains many tips and strategies to address our daily lives.
For instance, traveling is a challenge--particularly when walking and pulling suitcases, etc. around. And if you travel much, you appreciate my dilemma when walking from one airport terminal to another (possibly, appreciate is a misnomer). Thank goodness many airports are hiring carts and segue` guided wheelchairs for the likes of travelers who have issues similar to mine. Boomers’ bodies are aging after all, regardless of our young, brave minds. What once made me stand out, has now made me a veteran of an emerging group--travelers with handicaps.
But give it up? Not on your life.
My 6th decade is serving up dreams that I’ve always conjured--I’m not going to staunch the flow.
Instead, finding ways to accommodate serves me better--and I’m not alone.
