Bio
Hands of Care and Hope (HCH) was founded by the late Sr. Lydia Pardeller, a Franciscan Missionary Sister for Africa (FMSA) in February 2006 with the assistance of a team of Kenyan Christians from the parish of Kariobangi. Its offices are located in Kariobangi Chesire Home along Cardinal Otunga Rd
Following FMSA charism, Hands of Care and Hope’s main objective is to offer support to the neediest in the society and in this case families staying in the slums of Kariobangi, Korogocho and Huruma. It has embraced a multi-pronged approach to ensure proper transformation of poor families in the slums.
HCH-FMSA began as a feeding program operating from within the Parish compound before other programs were rolled out. Madoya community school was then constructed in Huruma-Ngei followed by St. Clare Non-Formal School comprised of St. John Bosco centre for pre-school, New life centre for grades 1-3, New Hope centre for grades 4-5 and then St. Clare Centre for grades 6-8.
When the pioneer group of learners completed grade 8, HCH-FMSA constructed St. Francis of Assisi Secondary School to enable learners to continue with their post-primary education without uninterrupted. HCH-FMSA has been and is still providing basic education for free. We, however, came up with a cost-sharing plan with the learners’ parents/guardians to enable parents to commit to the education of their children to prevent dependency syndrome.
In addition to the education program, HCH-FMSA runs an Integrated Responsible Parenthood program that seeks to develop the capacity for parents to properly bring up their children. The parents are equipped with relevant and generally acceptable skills to combat the parenting challenges of the modern-day world whilst also being economically empowered to support their families. The overall aim is to improve the psycho-social wellbeing of the children in our schools. Activities undertaken in this program include;-
1. Behaviour Change Process
2. Effective Parenting Training
3. Child rights Advocacy Training
4. Business management Training
In support of youths who are out of school after completing their basic education or dropping out along the way and are stranded or engaging in various forms of social evils in the community, HCH-FMSA established an Out-Of-School Youth Program that takes youths through life-changing life skills training after which they are financially supported to undertake vocational/certificate courses in colleges.
HCH-FMSA also runs a farm in Juja area (JUJA FARM). The farm is meant to guarantee the sustainability of other programs of Hands of Care and Hope through the revenue generated by its farm produce. The agricultural activities being undertaken in the farm include poultry, fish and crop farming
