Bio
Herb Weiss, the City of Pawtucket’s Economic and Cultural Affairs Officer, oversees the efforts to transform and revitalize the historic mill town through the arts.
In the Department of Planning and Redevelopment, Mr. Weiss is responsible for economic development activities, the oversight of cultural and artistic programs, and fundraising for city festivals. In this role, he has brought significant recognition for Pawtucket’s arts-oriented development strategy. Articles about the City’s efforts have appeared the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, The Providence Journal, Pawtucket Times, and the Providence Phoenix.
Mr. Weiss has been instrumental in development of the City’s Arts and Entertainment District as well as in bringing numerous artists, craftsmen, and cultural organizations and businesses to Pawtucket. He served as President of the Pawtucket of the Pawtucket Rotary Club, from 2005 to 2007. As an advocate for the City’s Pawtucket businesses, artists and arts groups he has been instrumental in securing donations from area businesses in support of the city’s most visible and important programs, including the annual Pawtucket Arts Festival.
In 2004, Mr. Weiss received the Pawtucket Foundation’s Person of the Year Award for his efforts to economically revitalize the City of Pawtucket. One year later, he received the All Children’s Theater’s Individual Award, for his significant contribution to assisting ACT in reaching its goals and objectives.
Mr. Weiss has also enjoyed a distinguished 35
year career in journalism, earning a national reputation as an expert on issues facing the aging, health care and medical fields. To date, over 510 articles, he has written or co-written, have appeared in national, state, and local publications. He served as founding editor of Senior Living (later renamed Prime Time), a publication distributed to over 30,000 readers in Rhode Island.
Mr. Weiss is a recipient of the AARP Rhode Island’s Vision Award for a weekly “All About Seniors” column that appeared in the Pawtucket Times. His articles appear in Senior Digest and Prime Time, monthly publications distributed throughout Rhode Island. He also received the American College of Health Care Administrator’s National Journalism Award for his coverage of nursing home issues in 1994 and again in 1999. In 1998, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni’s Award by the Center for Studies in Aging, North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, for his long time coverage of aging issues.
Today, his weekly Commentary touching on aging, medical, and baby boomer issues is published in the Pawtucket Times and Woonsocket Call, two Rhode Island daily newspapers.
Mr. Weiss currently serves on the Rhode Island’s Small Business Advocacy Council, the Governor’s Rhode Island Disability Council, and sits on the Board of Directors and the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame, Slater Mill Museum, among a few.
Mr. Weiss received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a Concentration from Social Work from the University of Texas in Austin in 1977; a Master of Arts in Gerontology in 1979 and a Certificate – Specialist in Aging in 1979 from North Texas State University in 1970 in Denton Texas.
