Janis Savitt’s Biography
Janis Savitt, a native New Yorker, has had a fascination with jewelry since she has been a young girl. Her fondest childhood memories were watching her mother, Mildred, receive huge diamonds in a Cracker Jack box that were given to her as a present from her artist husband, Paul Savitt. That was it! She was sold on her lifelong love: jewelry.
When Janis was 12 years old, she and her mother were walking through a department store in New York. She saw a particularly intriguing showcase in the jewelry department filled with exquisite jewelry and jewelry making tools. This prompted Janis to turn to her mother and say, “I want to learn how to make jewelry”.
Janis was quickly enrolled at the YWCA for jewelry making and silversmith classes, where her early pieces were created. While still in high school, Janis decided to show her collection to New York’s finest stores; Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier, Henri Bendel and Bloomingdales. Everyone she presented the collection to bought it. The collection was in instant success. Janis was off and running, making all those girls happy around the world.
Among her greatest achievements, Janis has been the proud recipient of 3 De Beers Diamond International Awards, and is a two-time nominee for the CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year Award. Her designs have graced the runways of world renowned designers; Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Vera Wang, Tory Birch, Stephen Sprouse and Carolina Herrera. Janis’ jewelry has adorned the bodies of celebrities from Maya Angelou to Lady Gaga.
Janis’ designs have been featured in fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Women’s Wear Daily.
Janis built the extremely successful M & J Savitt, assuming her role as Head Jewelry Designer.
In 2008, Janis launched JANIS by Janis Savitt, a collection of affordable jewelry utilizing brass, steel, chains, Swarovski crystals and pearls, which created jewelry trends for the entire industry.
In 2013, Janis felt it was time to bring back real gold and diamonds, creating JANIS SAVITT, a fine jewelry collection made from 18 carat gold, diamonds, colored stones and pearls. The collection has a timeless quality. The pieces can be worn simply alone, stacked together, consisting of geometric designs with a touch of hardware inspiration, perfect for today’s modern girls. The new collection will be featured exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman and other fine retailers in the U.S. and overseas.
