Bio
I’ve spent thirty years specializing in the law affecting companies and programs in the outdoor recreation industry. My clients range from university outdoor programs to Everest guide services and equipment manufactures. I’ve been involved in litigation concerning raft companies, mountaineering guide services, canoe liveries, climbing hardware, ropes (challenge) courses and many others.
I’ve written over 100 legal articles and given more than 100 speeches on the topic. I’ve had articles published in the Wilderness Medical Society Journal, Paddle Dealer Magazine, Inside/Outside, Scouter, GearTrends and Recreation Management. I was a contributor to the Risk Management Chapter of the Boy Scout of America Field Book and have written chapters in Legal Liability and Risk Management in Adventure Tourism and Controversial Issues in Adventure Programming.
I teach ski area risk management for Colorado Mountain College in the Ski Area Operations program both online and a traditional classroom. I’ve taught seminars at Cornell, Oregon State University, University of Idaho, University of Utah and several other colleges.
I am the US representative to the Safety Committee of the Union Internationale des Association d’Alpinisme (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation) and a member American Society of Testing & Materials. I’m one of the co-founders of the National Outdoor Book Awards and I serve on the board of directors of the Trade Association of Paddlesports, Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education and the Galapagos Preservation Society.
I've also served as an expert witness for outfitters and camps in the recreation industry.
I know this area of the law and enjoy working with my clients to protect them from the issues they may encounter.
