Bio
I am a professional fine artist who has worked continuously for nearly 46 years.
A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, my portrait John Carlson, 24 x 24 inches, oil on
linen, 1972, is the first known example of Neo-Expressionism in the USA.
Since then, my work has spanned media from the classical to the digital. I have painted, created provocative photography, and am one of the original founders of the digital art revolution.
I, over a life-long career, have painted in oils and acrylics, on linen and canvas and have created
innumerable works on paper. My works ranges from representational, to expressionistic, to abstract. My
outpouring of work has intentionally defied branding.
I have exhibited since the 70s. His artwork has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries
and cultural centers throughout the United States.
My paintings and works on paper are in private and
corporate collections, including those of Pfizer Inc., and Kirkland & Ellis LLP. My photographic work is in
the collection of the Kinsey Museum in the Midwest.
In 2016, Herbert was summoned back to Brooklyn to collaborate with a team of four other artists, they
created a 125 square-foot mural celebrating the origin of bread-making for Damascus Bakery in DUMBO,
Brooklyn. The mural is a local landmark – a testament the patron’s passion for his business, and the world-
renowned art colony neighborhood wherein it is situated.
Since relocating to Sarasota in late 2015 to establish my Gillespie Park Studio, I continue to create
powerful abstract and representational works of art. Upon my arrival in Sarasota, FL, the recognition of my
talent was immediate. I was the featured artist in the Fall 2016 issue of WorkingTitle, a well-known
Suncoast art magazine, and The Winter 2018 issue of that magazine features me. The Best of Friends, a
Neo-Expressionist bronze sculpture, graces the cover and is accompanied by an in-depth review of my work by Mark Ormond, a renowned curator and arts writer.
