Bio
Joachim Robbrecht is a freelance director from Belgium working in the Netherlands. He finished his education in 2oo6 at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in 2006 and that same year won the Ton Lutz price for the most remarkable young director of the Netherlands with his interpretation of Adam in Ballingschap, a dutch repertory play. Since then he is working as an author/director for several companies and production houses, among which are Frascati productions Amsterdam and Toneelgroep Amsterdam. He has established his name as a director with succesful plays as IJS, Venlo and Rashomon Effect a.o., that are satirical comments on the dutch society and identity in the first years of his career. In 2010 and 2011 he started two projects reflecting on the position of the stranger in dutch society, Rosto in turansureishon and Oh Polsko. These plays gained wide acclaim and were also shown outside of the Netherlands. In 2011 Joachim Robbrecht won the bi-anual Charlotte Köhler encouragement price for his work.
Before Robbrecht started out as a director he accomplished a study German literature and linguistics in Vienna and Berlin and has stayed in touch with the German theatre scene, writing critics for dutch magazines and as a guest of the Schillertage in Mannheim and the Wiener Festwochen.
Joachim Robbrecht works as a director, writer and performer in the Netherlands. He studied German literature at the universities of Ghent and Berlin and Directing at the Theaterschool in Amsterdam. He is now based in Rotterdam and his projects are produced by Frascati Producties en Productiehuis Rotterdam.
Besides of his own initiatives as an author-director Joachim Robbrecht collaborated with his fellow director Sarah Moeremans as an author and performer and with a number of theater groups, such as Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Wunderbaum and de Warme Winkel as an author-director. He also works as a guest teacher at both the actor and director department of Toneelschool Maastricht. His work was awarded the Ton Lutz prijs in 2006 and the Charlotte Köhler prijs in 2011.
