Bio
John Elliott is a journalist and author who was based in New Delhi for over 20 years till mid-2018 when he returned to London. His 2014 award-winning best seller, "IMPLOSION: India's Tryst with Reality" was published in three editions, one hardback (2014), and two paperback (2015, 2019). The book examines how India works - and how it doesn't, and how institutions are crumbling - partly caused by ‘quick fix’ attitude of ‘jugaad’ and laissez faire's ‘chalta hai’ that together have eaten into the social and political fabric. The 2019 edition analyses Narendra Modi's first five years in power.
In Asia from 1983, John was the Financial Times' first Delhi-based South Asia Correspondent from 1983 to 88, and was then posted in Hong Kong. From 1991 to 1994, he took time out from journalism and was Public Affairs Adviser to the Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong Government. After returning to India in 1995, he wrote for The Economist, Fortune magazine, New Statesman and others. He was president of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia (2007-09) and the International Association of Press Clubs (2008-09).
He co-edited "Foreign Correspondent - 50 Years of Reporting South Asia" (Penguin India hardback 2008, paperback 2009).
This Riding the Elephant current affairs blog began on FORTUNE magazine's website in April 2007 and he took it over in August 2008. It also appears on the Asia Sentinel (Hong Kong) news website and has run in the past on the websites of Newsweek (US), The Independent (UK) and the FT.
Ideally, he’d like to be writing in the Himalayan foothills or the wilds of Madhya Pradesh.
