Bio
J. P. Wearing (B.A., University of Wales; M.A., University of Saskatchewan; Ph.D., University of Wales) is a professor emeritus of English at the University of Arizona and an internationally renowned theatre historian. In addition to the original sixteen-volume Scarecrow London Stage calendar series covering the years 1890–1959 (revised and expanded in 2014) and numerous articles, he is the author or editor of the following books: The Collected Letters of Sir Arthur Pinero (1974); English Drama and Theatre, 1800–1900 (1978); American and British Theatrical Biography: A Directory (1979); G. B. Shaw: An Annotated Bibliography of Writings about Him: Volume I: 1871–1930 (1986); Bernard Shaw and Nancy Astor: Selected Correspondence of Bernard Shaw (2005); The Shakespeare Diaries: A Fictional Autobiography (2007); Arthur Wing Pinero: The Second Mrs. Tanqueray (2007); Bernard Shaw: Arms and the Man (2008); Bernard Shaw: On War (2009); and American and British Theatrical Biographies: An Index (2012); William Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet (2023), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (2023). He was one of the founding editors of Nineteenth Century Theatre Research, which he edited for fifteen years. His awards include an Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Post-Doctoral Fellowship held at the University of Alberta, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, and two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
