Bio
Random bio: I grew up in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Western Montana. It took me a while to get used to people sometimes calling the hills around Ithaca "mountains." After I graduated from college in Oregon, I moved to Japan, where I lived off and on for four and a half years for work and research. I moved to Ithaca to wrangle a PhD out of Cornell, then went back to Japan to conduct my doctoral field research in the southern island of Okinawa. I now teach several courses related to the region, including "Politics of East Asia," "Imperialisms in the Asia-Pacific," and "US-China Relations in Global Perspective." I also teach a course called "Militarization of Everyday Life" (which was inspired by my fieldwork on US military presence in Okinawa), and the department's intro to political theory course, Ideas and Ideologies. These days, I live with my partner about 20 miles from Ithaca on our small farm. We live "off the grid"--using solar and wind power to generate our electricity. I start (almost) every morning with a strong cup of coffee and a walk in our woods with our very energetic border collie, Xela. I consider myself a full-time teacher and academic and part-time farmer, while my partner is a part-time teacher and full-time farmer.
