Bio
Keith Kessler
Playwright, Wordsmith.
Welcome
Keith Kessler is a produced playwright, a lover of words and a professional punster.
Playwright. Audiences rave about Keith Kessler’s shows. His subjects run from the serious to the sublime and are always seasoned with humor and life insights. He has a flair for writing words that actors thrive on and audiences identify with. His love of theatre extends from the footlights to the last corner seat in the balcony.
Keith has participated in over 30 plays. As a playwright, actor, director and producer, he loves all aspects of the theatre. And, because of his wide and varied background, he brings a rich understanding of the entire process of bringing a play from its initial germination through production and the final strike.
Wordsmith. Lyrics, poetry, full length plays - Keith loves them all. He is currently finalizing manuscripts of over seventy of his poems; as well as a life story of his struggle with depression. He has written several children’s plays that are produced at Cottage Theatre’s Summer Camp each year. And, he is finishing up a rewrite of Dusk to Dust – a play about teenage suicide, produced in 2008 at a local high school.
Life Story. Keith looks at life through a level that is half a bubble off plumb. If he were a comic strip character he would live over on “The Far Side.” He was an elementary school teacher for 20 years and recently retired as a high school counselor after 10 years. His over 30+ years of working with young people has kept him young at heart and grey haired trying to keep up with them. These experiences give him a unique understanding of the pain, problems and the incredible energy of young people. He has worked as a carpenter’s helper, dish washer, chemical salesman, coach and mentor as well as the world’s best cook at Kentucky Fried Chicken. He has fought depression and come out the other side only slightly off kilter. At least, according to him. Please do not take a poll of his friends.
Personal. Keith lives in the small but incredibly beautiful hamlet of Cottage Grove, Oregon at the base of the Willamette Valley. He has been married for 30+ years to Elaine, a professional in education. They love to travel and watch Nero Wolfe DVD’s. They have two grown daughters, both teachers.
