Bio
Ken Schmetterer is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1985) and Harvard Law School (1989). A partner at the law firm of DLA Piper, Ken has supported juvenile justice and educational pro bono opportunities for years. He is a board member of UMOJA Student Development Corporation (www.umojacorporation.org) and the National Juvenile Defender Center (www.njdc.info). He was co-author and senior editor of a policy study, "From Juvenile Court To The Classroom: The Need For Effective Child Advocacy", advocating for a more effective transition to school for children leaving the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. He has authored or co-authored Amicus Briefs for the American Bar Association involving children's issues in cases before the United States Supreme Court, including J.D.B. v. North Carolina (involving school children subjected to police questioning), Miller v. Alabama and Graham v. Florida (involving the sentencing of children to life without the possibility of parole). He has been recognized for his pro bono efforts from DLA Piper, The Chicago Appleseed Fund for Justice, and the Sun Times Abraham Lincoln Maravitz Lend-A-Hand Award. Ken is married and has three children.
