Bio
I was born on Feb. 12, 1809. Had about one year of education because we moved around so much. I love to read and learn. Became a lawyer, moved to Springfield, Ill. to practice the law. Got elected as a congressman and went to Washington, D.C. Went back home to Springfield after my term in office and practiced law and went back into politics in the late 1850s when I debated with Stephen Douglas. Lost the race, but in 1860 was nominated to be the Republican candidate for President. I won the election in November 1860. Took the oath of office on March 4, 1861. It was my responsibility to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Our great nation was taken into war between rebelling southern states. After four years of bloody war, and over 700,000 lives lost, the war ended. Tragically, mine also ended when John Wilkes Booth shot me as I was watching the play "Our American Cousin" in Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865.
