Bio
I’ve always enjoyed discovering answers to head-scratching questions. I earned a Ph.D. in Physiology and taught college biology for several years. About 20 years ago I also began studying the Bible in its historical context. All of a sudden I started finding answers to perplexing questions and insights that deepened my faith. So, I began learning Hebrew, studying in the land of Israel, and exploring recent scholarship on Jesus’ first-century context. Ultimately, I left a life in academia to devote myself full-time to teaching and writing on the topic.
My most recent book (Baker, 2018) is called "Reading the Bible with Rabbi Jesus." It equips Christians to read the Bible more like one of Jesus first-century disciples by looking at differences between our world and Jesus’ middle eastern, Jewish culture.
Before this I wrote "Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus" (Zondervan, 2012). There, I looked at some of Jesus’ most important words in light of their Jewish context. Preceding that, I partnered with Ann Spangler to write "Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus." (Zondervan, 2009) The book immerses readers in the culture and history of first-century Jews to show how they shed light on the ministry of Jesus. My first book was published in 2004, "Listening to the Language of the Bible," a devotional guide to Hebrew words and ideas.
Along with writing, I also speak publicly. You can see all my books along with my newest articles at my blog, OurRabbiJesus.com.
