Bio
Mairi Ward: Born 1980, Mairi lives and works from her studio in Launceston, Tasmania.
Artist Statement: ‘I paint intuitively, as a response to the environment I live in, from the perspective that I am inseparable from it. My paintings are abstract works composed of intricate layers of overlapping and interlocking forms and colours. For me, the process is the outcome, when immersed in it I find a sense of inner peace and freedom. My paintings are quiet moments of personal freedom and reflections on impermanence. They are about being present and in the moment.’
Bio: In 2005 Mairi enrolled in a Bachelor of Contemporary Art at the University of Tasmania, which she completed in 2008 with first class honours as well as receiving a University Medal for outstanding academic achievement. Mairi exhibits regularly and has received a number of commissions, scholarships and awards, including an: Australian Postgraduate Award to undertake a Masters of Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania (completed in 2011); being commissioned by Ten Days on the Island Art Festival to create a large scale outdoor artwork for the 2011 Festival; an ArtStart grant from the Australia Council for the Arts in 2013; Arts Tasmania Assistance to Individuals grants to create new work; had paintings selected for two Arts Tasmania public art commissions and has been selected as a finalist in the 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2015 Glover painting prize.
