ABOUT US
Makhosana Manzini was established in August 1994. It was formed to relieve the overcrowded ML Nkuna High School. During this time the school had no educator posts allocation. Some educators who were deemed to be in excess in the neighbouring primary schools were redeployed to provide teaching in the school. In that year the school had only eight classrooms, 20 toilets for both boys and girls and the staff. During that time the school had only two grades, i.e Grade 8 & 9. Since it was an extension of ML Nkuna high school, this school did not have its own resources. It depended on ML Nkuna for its functionality. The principal of ML Nkuna high school, Mr Mabuza SB was requested to be the care taker of the school up until the school had its own principal.
In January 1995 Mr Nkuna Martin was appointed as the principal of the school. Some few posts were allocated for the school to beef up the existing staff. More learners were coming to the school and that created accommodation crisis. The principal had to operate from the car as there was no office. The school committee chaired by Mr Mavundza XC was then elected. Parents raised funds to build two shacks to mitigate overcrowding. However that did not help much as some learners were taught under trees. Out of parents effort some two more classes were built from stock bricks. Those classes were of big size that each of them was accommodating 140 learners. Grades were growing each year. The school started to register Grade 12 learners in 1998. As the school began to dominate in producing good results in Grade 12 , the school started to attract the attention of learners from nearby and far away villages. The pressure for more accommodation began to mount. More classes were built by the department. The classes could not address the overcrowding crisis. There are currently 24 classrooms, but the class learner average is at 1: 66. This makes teaching and learning not to be effective.
The performance of the school in Grade 12 results did not only attract the attention of the learners. The National department of education declared it a Dinaledi school, which meant that it had to promote the teaching of Maths and Science. The provincial department has now included the school in the Maths Science and Technology programme (MST).
NGO’s like Penreach and the Industrial Development Corporation became the major partners of the school. They provided support in many respect which benefited the school. Both of them assist the school in obtaining more resources, and also to provide learner support programs and teacher developmental programs.
Even though the involvement of the NGO’s came as a relief to the department, but still they could not cope with the backlogs of the infrastructural challenges facing the school. The school does not have a hall, library, computer laboratory or even a descent kitchen facility for the nutrition program which is run by the department.
More support is still needed to the school. Interested bodies and organizations are welcomed to provide any kind of help.
