Bio
Martha Frish is an urban planner, educator and writer. As a member of the Board of Directors of Chicago's Friends of Downtown, she initiated and organized the city’s inaugural participation in the global Jane’s Walk event from 2013 to 2017. Educating the public and promoting awareness about the importance of place IS public service. She cares tremendously about educating and inspiring children and adults to look closely at their environment, and see the stories in their surroundings.
Jane’s WalkCHICAGO grew from the glimmer of an idea in the Fall of 2012 to annual weekends experiencing over 40% growth in attendance each year, and extending over a 20-mile distance from the North Side of Chicago to the Far South Side. In 2017, over 400 people signed up for Walks on our two-day weekend.
Martha's work is about context: analyzing how current conditions came to be, and how they’ve so badly served so many people throughout the United States. It’s been shown that architecture and urban design have a tremendous effect on people - emotionally, socially, psychologically – and there are immeasurable ways individuals can learn about how we got here, and why those subjects are important.
Her goals in writing has been to educate people to be more aware of their surroundings, stimulating them with achievable ideas about improving the places they live and work, and thus ultimately improving American quality of life.
